Help Bring the Olympics to M.S. 353

My students have aspirations to be the next LeBron James! The next Steph Curry! Notice both names are affiliated with basketball. Inspired by this past summer, I’m seeking to bring the olympics to my students. They should know that their future aspirations don’t have to be restricted to just basketball. My students have displayed such physical raw talent that would otherwise go unnoticed and undeveloped, without the implementation of a sports program at our school.
Research has shown that sports positively impacts student academic achievement as it teaches life lessons that extends beyond the playing field. Most of my students are multiple reading levels behind grade level, and still struggle with their multiplication tables. I believe that using these olympic games as motivation will be sure to improve their academic performance and educational aspirations.
Just like any of us, when my students experience a taste of success in any aspect of their life, it motivates them to try even harder to attain success in all areas. It is my belief that when they experience success through these athletic games, it will catapult those same qualities of hard work and dedication into the classroom.
My mission this year is to take a holistic approach towards the education of my students. In addition to the academics in the classroom, I want to instill in them values of hard work, teamwork, and dedication. With this charge, I will be bringing The Lightning Games (M.S. 353’s Olympics) to our school. Students will get the chance to compete in 37-40 individual and Team events—track, basketball, football, volleyball, badminton, soccer, etc.— that will require students to utilize their strength, speed, and mental acuity. Because our school has very limited funding, which rationally is budgeted for the academic progression of our students, I’m seeking additional support in this endeavor. We have most of the materials necessary for the games; however, we are in need of a table tennis table and badminton/volleyball set. Please help to bring the Olympics to our future leaders at M.S 353, and who knows? Maybe One of our very own will be standing on the podium in Tokyo 2020.
