Hoop on Main basketball tournament

Donation protected
Ya think ya can ball?!?! This is your opportunity to show it!

Black Lives Matter Cincinnati, in support of the Keep Our Courts campaign, is organizing a 3 on 3 Basketball tournament on July 9th to oppose gentrification and support equitable development. There will be two different age groups 13-17 and 18+. There will also be fun activities for children and adults all day long. The City of Cincinnati wants to sell off  the basketball courts and recreation space adjacent to Rothenberg Preparatory Academy to a private corporation with plans to demolish and replace them with expensive homes. The tournament will be held on these courts.

The event will start at 10 a.m. sharp. There will be music and a BBQ , with plenty of free food, non-stop. With this event, we hope to bring together the youth who use the courts daily and a multitude of community members and concerned Cincinnatians to raise awareness and build a movement against the gentrification of Over the Rhine.

The event is entirely volunteer and supporter funded. That’s why we need your help. No donation is too small!

If you’d like to volunteer (we need refs, grillers, announcers, safety personnel, etc.) or donate materials contact [email redacted]. We have a complete list with all of our volunteer needs we will share with you.

All the money collected will be spent to buy prizes, food, shirts and other items for the tournament. Any extra dollars will be invested in community-oriented projects like providing children in OTR with CRC and public pool memberships.

- For donations of $50 and over you will receive a Hoop on Main t-shirt. So please tell us what size you want and your mailing address .

- For donations of $75 and over you will receive either two BLM t-shirts or a BLM sweatshirt. So please tell us which size/s you want and your mailing address.

------ Why a tournament against gentrification? -------

While some call it the Cincinnati Renaissance, the remodelling of historic Over The Rhine has had a tremendous social cost. Gentrification, urban renewal, and urban renaissance are all code words for the removal and alienation of the low-income, long-time residents of Over-the-Rhine. In fact, the “development” of the city has primarily benefited private corporations, business owners, and mostly-white wealthy residents who are moving into the city from the suburbs to “re-claim” the city center.

Now the City of Cincinnati is considering the transfer of this valuable public land  to a private developer  called NorthPointe. The area, adjacent to the Rothenberg Preparatory Academy, contains a community garden, open green space, and two basketball courts. NorthPointe’s plan is to demolish these community assets  to make way for $500,000 single-family homes . The proposal’s claim to include “workforce housing” rests with 8 rental units  expected to go on the market for $950/mo for a single bedroom! These courts are vital for many of the children in the neighborhood who play on them daily. Their removal/relocation contributes directly to the  erasure of Black and low income faces from the area.

Development does not have to be only for some. We now have a tremendous opportunity to change the course of history in Cincinnati. We can only do so if we, the people, come together and fight back against the interests of large corporations and the systemic classism and racism that offers economic investment only to the wealthy.  Together we can demand a more just and equitable future for our communities!
