Bob Becker to Mt. Gaoligong Ultra

Donation protected
Hello!  My name is Kara Goucher and I am a two time Olympian in track and field.

I am raising money for my uncle-in-law Bob Becker.  Bob is my husband Adam Goucher's uncle and one of the most inspiring people I have ever met.

Bob ran his first marathon in 2002 at the age of 57 and was hooked.  He started Ultra running and has never looked back--running many 100-mile and 50-mile races throughout the U.S. while surviving radical prostate cancer in 2006 and recovering from a fractured femur during a race in '05.  Since 2003, Bob Becker has run the Boston Marathon, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, raced in the 150-mile Marathon des Sables stage race in the Sahara Desert in Morocco (2005), the 167 mile Grand 2 Grand Ultra stage race in the southwestern U.S. (2012) and the 120-mile TransRockies stage race in Colorado (2016). Bob has completed "Badwater" three times, the iconic 135-mile road race through Death Valley that ends at the Mt. Whitney Portal at 8,300 feet,  In July 2015, after his third completion, Bob continued to the summit of Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft.), then ran back to the start of the race at the Badwater Basin.  That 292 mile round trip is known as the "Badwater Double".   At 70 years of age, Bob had just broken the age record by 11 years!

Along the way, Bob Becker found a passion for creating, producing and directing exciting and unique long-distance running events, and introducing ultramarathon racing to thousands of athletes in South Florida and beyond. His inaugural event was the KEYS100 Ultramarathon, now in its 10th year.

Bob’s ultramarathons raise money to combat prostate and other cancers through “The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys”, and in support of the spectacular but under-funded Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, Florida’s largest, where his EVERGLADES ULTRAS race is held each year. Bob's individual races have also raised money for the National MS Society.

Bob does so much for others and now I'd like to do something for him.  When he told me about an inaugural 100-mile race in China where his father--Adam's grandfather--once flew in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps, and said how much it would mean to him to compete, I told him I would help him get there.

Please consider donating to this fund to get Bob to China.  The funds will go to flights, transportation, hotels and related race expenses for Bob and his wife Suzanne.

Bob does so much for the running community and I would love the running community to give back to allow Bob to experince this amazing opportunity, and special way to connect with his father.  Anything that you could give would be greatly appreciated and I will make sure to send many updates along the way.

The race is November 18-19, 2016, so we need to raise the money as soon as possible so that Bob can make travel arrangments.  Thank you so much for taking the time to consider donating to Bob and this adventure of a lifetime.  I'll leave you with Bob's words on how much this would mean to him.  Thank you so much!

"Mt. Gaoligong Ultra is a 100-mile mountain trail race based in Tengchong, China. Tengchong is located in the remote southwest of the country near the Myanmar (Burma) border, thousands of miles from Beijing. The race will incorporate sections of the ancient Silk Road as well as the Burma Road, an integral part of World War II history. Nearly 75 years ago, my father flew over the Burma Road in a B-25 Mitchell as a member of the Army Air Corps—right where I will be running on November 18-19! For me, the excitement of this extraordinary personal connection is palpable. The race includes 24,000 feet of elevation gain and another 24,000 feet of descent. Runners have 36 hours to complete 100 miles, with interim cut-off times at each of the 17 aid stations along the route. This will be a very difficult race challenge—and truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—a most unexpected athletic development of this or any other year!"
