Wadewitz Elementary school needs a new INCLUSIVE playground!
Currently, our playground is around 30 years old. It consists of a few slides, a broken bridge, and portions of the playground are boarded up due to safety issues. After it rains, the playground is flooded and unusable for about a week due to lack of drainage and 30 year old sand. We have the space to have a beautiful, safe playground structure, but a lack of funding leaves our children with few options during recess.
A new playground is extremely important for meeting the needs of all our students. Wadewitz has a very diverse student population. Nearly a quarter of our student body has special needs. This includes everything from students with autism, emotional behavior disorder, medically fragile, and wheelchair bound. These students are very important to us and unfortunately their needs are not being met with our current playground. We want all of our students to be fully included and able to enjoy recess. Currently, all of our students in wheelchairs are limited to the cracked blacktop, making it difficult for these students to interact and develop friendships. Because we instill values of inclusiveness, respect, and diversity, it is vital that we get our students a new and inclusive playground.
We are perhaps not rich in the typical sense, but we are a community rich in culture and diversity. We service 610 students in K4-5th grade. Our student population is 43% Hispanic, 31% Black, 20% White and 6% other. 24% of Wadewitz students receive special education services. Our school has a Spanish Dual Language program and 30% of the students are English Language Learners. 80% of our students are of low socioeconomic status and 100% are given free breakfast and lunch.
Numerous studies have shown that physical activity is critical to mental and social development. Kids learn, interact and develop through play. Right now, our current playground lacks this tremendous learning opportunity for ALL children.
Wadewitz students deserve a happy, safe, and inclusive place to play! We would appreciate your help in anyway possible.

¡La Escuela Primaria Wadewitz necesita un nuevo patio de juegos Inclusivo!
Actualmente, nuestro patio de juegos tiene más o menos 30 años. Tiene un par de resbaladillas, un puente reto y partes del patio de juegos esta clausurado por razones de seguridad. Después de llover, el patio de juegos se inunde y no se puede usar por más o menos una semana ya que le falta manera de drenar el agua y tiene arena de 30 años. Tenemos el espacio para tener un patio de juegos hermoso y seguro, pero la falta de dinero deja a nuestros estudiantes con pocas opciones durante el recreo.
Un patio de juegos nuevo es extremadamente importante para cumplir con todas las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes. Casi el 25% de nuestros estudiantes tienen necesidades especiales. Esto incluye estudiantes con autismo, discapacidades sociales/emocionales, medicamente frágiles y en sillas de ruedas. Estos estudiantes son muy importantes para nosotros y desafortunadamente no podemos cumplir con sus necesidades con el patio de juegos que tenemos actualmente. Queremos que todos nuestros estudiantes sean totalmente incluidos y que puedan disfrutar del recreo. Actualmente, todos nuestros estudiantes en sillas de ruedas, están limitados a solo usar un área con chapopote quebrado, lo cual hace difícil que estos estudiantes puedan interactuar y desarrollar amistades. Dado que inculcamos los valores de incluir a todos, respeto y diversidad, es de suma importancia que obtengamos un patio de juegos nuevo, que incluya a todos.
Quizás no seamos ricos en el sentido típico, pero somos una comunidad rica en cultura y diversidad. Les brindamos servicio a 610 estudiantes en los grados K4-5. Nuestra población estudiantil es: 43% Hispano, 31% Negro, 20% Blanco and 6% otro. 24% de los estudiantes de Wadewitz reciben servicios de educación especial. Nuestra escuela tiene el Programa de Lenguaje Dual y 30% de nuestros estudiantes son aprendices de inglés. 80% de nuestros estudiantes son de una posición socioeconómica baja y el 100% recibe desayuno y almuerzo gratuito.
Muchos estudios muestran que la actividad física es crítica para el desarrollo social y mental. Los niños aprenden, interactúan y se desarrollan por medio de juego. En este momento el patio de juegos que tenemos les niega esta oportunidad de aprendizaje a TODOS nuestros estudiantes.
