For almost four decades, the L.A. Weekly has earned the city’s goodwill through vigorous reporting and thoughtful coverage of L.A.’s vibrant cultural scenes. For a shadowy group of conservative pundits and real estate developers from Orange County to exploit that trust by gutting the paper’s award-winning staff and turning it into a mouthpiece for its interests is unconscionable and an affront to Los Angeles.

Brian Calle and whichever investors are still willing to be publicly associated with him are free to start a competing paper that reflects their values. But in the seven days since the regime change took effect, advertisers and concerned citizens have swiftly and unequivocally rejected he and Semanal Media’s far-right agenda, which includes anti-union measures, a reliance on unpaid labor, and support for the private prison industry.

In their public statements, Calle and his partners have brazenly lied––denying that they had fired the paper’s editorial staff––and showed an utter disrespect for Los Angeles and its vibrant culture. Worst of all, they believed that they could get away with it. It’s crucial we show that Los Angeles is not only paying attention to their craven takeover, but will fight it at every turn.

The ultimate goal is to sell the paper back to a group of responsible local citizens and investors and turn it into a non-profit publication solely accountable to the community.

Funds raised from this campaign will be used to cover the cost of prop rentals and audio equipment for the demonstration, along with other protest materials. Any remaining funds will be donated to the Society of Professional Journalists and the ACLU of Southern California.
