24 Hours of Homelessness 2016

The 24 Hours of Homelessness event is a fundraiser that the 2nd students of the Community and Justice Services Program participate in each fall, in partnership with Operation Come Home. This year is our 12th Annual event!
Half of all the money raised goes directly to Operation Come Home, and another 40% goes to the program’s emergency student bursary; the last 10% goes into the class fund. Students collect donations prior to the event with pledge forms and through Go Fund Me, and they will be “pan-handling” on the street during the event.
The 24 Hours of Homelessness is also an awareness raiser - students will experience being homeless for a 24 hour period in order to gain some perspective into what life would be like if you had to live on the streets of Ottawa. These students will be going into field placements in November, and this event gives them some insight into the issues that their future clients face because of poverty and homelessness....issues that most often play a factor in their involvement in the criminal justice system. The students benefit, as does the community, because the insight they gain from this experience will make them more compassionate, more aware, and more informed as workers in community and justice service agencies.
Additionally, the event raises awareness in our community about issues that affect adults and children who live in poverty. It gives us an opportunity to look at the realities of not having access to basic needs that most of us take for granted, like food, shelter, and proper clothing.
This year, the 24 Hours of Homelessness event will take place from September 30th to October 1st (from 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.) in Minto Park (on Elgin Street, across from Jack Purcell Community Centre).
