Wildlife Conservation Artwork

Donation protected
My name is Paige Garland. I was very disturbed by the amount of Australian wildlife I saw dead beside our roads. So I applied for a permit to collect the feathers of dead birds, for one year.

The feathers of Australian birds are magnificent it seemed such a waste of the birds life if I didn't make something good come from their death. My artwork is designed to be a beautiful, lasting memorial to the life of each bird.

For months now I have been collecting feathers and creating artworks from them. I record the date I collected the feathers, photograph where I found them and put that information and the photos on the back of each artwork, with a copy of the permit. On the back I seal the edges of the artwork with tape.

The source of feathers from dead birds includes a bird that was killed by a cat. Australia has a major problem with feral cats. We have millions of them and they are descimating our wildlife. As a nation we are the global leaders for domestic cat owners too, so responsible cat ownership and an increased attention by government on feral cat management is another desired outcome of this project.

I have started donating to community groups (scouts, environmental groups)  and schools in the areas that the birds came from. When I give the art work away, I do a speech about the project. I encourage people to care about their wildlife, learn about it, understand the threats to it and take steps to conserve it.

I hope that by raising the profile of the issues along the Brisbane Valley Highway in particular, that some university research occurs to replicate the great interventions that have been developed to conserve koalas along the South East Freeway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Australia.

I would like some financial assistance to cover the costs associated with the project eg picture frames, transport, health and safety equipment.

By giving away most of the artworks locally, I hope that my project has intergenerational impact.

I would be extremelly grateful for any financial assistance you can provide me. I am currently unemployed.

My project was covered on Australia's most respected media outlet:  ABC national news.
