Sheena's Medical Bills

Donation protected
My name is Sheena McCrary. I am 30 years old and have been living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 8 years. To find out more about this disease: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chronic-fatigue-syndrome/basics/definition/con-20022009

No donation is too small. Even $5 will help.

The past 8 years have been fraught with pain and disappointment. After seeing traditional medicine doctors and being told I have mono that won't go away, and the only treatment available is exercise and change of my diet, I have struggled to stay positive and maintain employment. I have been told I am a hypochondriac, that I can change my sleep schedule if I try hard enough, and in some cases that all my pain is in my head. I hope you can imagine, being 22 and hearing these things made me turned inward and in many ways hate myself.

I have seen periods of hope. I began eating gluten free 3 years ago and this resulted in less gut pain, less brain fog and lessened my depression. I have been diagnosed with Major Depression. I have serious anxiety, and though I am an extrovert, I have adjusted my lifestyle to find entertainment alone. I also have attended therapy. I went without medical insurance for 5 years. It's so hard to get treatment without money. Therapy most likely saved my life. I learned that all people who have chronic illness suffer with depression and stuggle with what others would say are simple tasks. Despite all the pain and suferring I have endured, it has made me a better person. I understand how it feels to be told by doctors no treatment is available and to have friendships and familial relations suffer. I have learned to rely on myself, and to have confidence in myself. I have learned the value of telling the truth, no matter hard or scary it seems. I have learned that love means loving the bad parts just as much as the good. Love for yourself deepens your capacity to love others. Love strips away pride and opens your eyes to injustice.

Despite all my pain and suffering, I am still very blessed. I try to be positive, but chronic pain changes your thinking in ways that is hard to explain. Ration and reason suffer, and you become blind to the wealth of blessings all around. I have gone from being a passive agnostic, to praying everyday that I will have hope to get through tomorrow. When people fail you, your body and mind fail you, there is only the divine left. I seek hope in nature. My dog and cat remind me everyday that compassion is divine, and the divine has compassion for me.

The money I am raising is to pay for a Functional Medicine doctor. I have researched Chronic Fatigue treatment and functional medicine seeks to investigate WHY one is sick, instead of traditional medicine's approach to only treat symptoms. This doctor does not accept any insurance. My parents have agreed to pay for the cost upfront, and I will slowly pay them back. To see the nurse practitioner is $900 and with lab work the cost can be up to $2800.

Because my disease makes work difficult, money is hard to come by. I hope that this doctor treats my fatigue and I can use my Sociology degree to help others.

If you decide to donate, you will be saving my life. I work hard and have lots of love in my heart. By helping me now, I hope to help the world. Just writing this I am close to tears. If you've ever felt lost and without hope, you will understand how it feels to have a helping hand. I love to help other people, listen to their problems, and encourage them to follow their dreams. I'm good at it. I also strive to be the best member of plant earth. I think the divine bestowed us with the gift to care for our world, and I take that responsibility very seriously. To take care of what has been given is to show respect. It is humbling and I hope to spread more love into the world instead of greed.

To say thank you on paper is so without emotion, but the sentiment behind it is genuine. Thank you. THANK YOU. I hope the best for you and yours.

With hope,

Sheena :)
