save the meditation Center

Wat Tum (Tummaprateip) of Washington DC is a non-profit organization in Accokeek, Maryland.  Accokeek is approximately 15 miles South of Washington DC.

Wat Tum has been an active and practicing meditation center and Thai Buddhist Monastery since it’s founding in Northern Virginia almost two decades ago.  The Abbot’s mission was to move the center from the confines of suburban Northern Virginia to an old farm to provide a peaceful and meditative surroundings for those who are interested in developing meditation skills to aide them in all aspects of their lives.


Since moving to Accokeek, Wat Tum has thrived and quickly paid off it’s mortgage and ten years ago began the long journey towards building a large enough facility to help anyone interested and in need of meditation practice and for those who also practice in the Therevada tradition.

Since this began, our first planner passed away after our preliminary plan submission.  Later, the effort continued without experienced development help and had to be started almost entirely over again.  Finally, I was asked to help four years ago and enlisted the help of professional colleagues experienced in land development and facility construction.  We had succeeded in obtaining promises of funding and began construction of our beautiful 16,600 SF Meditation Center last summer.  We have paid over a million dollars to date and  have the slab, steel building, and roof installed.  Then things went terribly wrong with funding this winter.  We are in a terrible position where we have fallen behind on contractor payments and are attempting to finance the balance with a loan.  Because we have depleted our reserves to continue paying our contractor, we are struggling.  My wife heard of this website so here we are.

Meditation bridges all religions, all professions, and all physical and emotional needs.  The world needs people like our Monks to teach and places like this new center in order to reach the most people. In a world where there are so many powers pushing people away from each other, Meditation and Buddhist practice provides the skills to bring people together and to learn themselves at the same time.  Please help these wonderful people on their selfless mission.
