Fundraiser for The Coalition Zine
Donation protected
For three years, The Coalition has been wholly dedicated to making space for women of colour, through literature and visual arts. Since our debut in 2013, we've curated seven issues of our print zine and used our online presence as a platform to tell our individual stories, independently.
We believe that it's important for women colour, of all ages, to create the media they want to see and that's what we aim to do with no reservations. The internet has been our haven, giving us the opportunity to reach a wide audience of girls, women, and femme identifying people who share our vision and want to see more young women of colour dominate today's media on our own terms. All the work we've done has been greatly influenced by the freedom that teh internet has given us. Now, we believe it's time to take it to our very own communities.
This summer, we want to bring our movement and platform into various communities and bring more women and femme-identifying people of colour to the forefront. We want to do this through interactive free projects and spaces that aim to celebrate subjects and themes that are close to our hearts such as:
-Solidarity
-Women of colour writing and making art in the diaspora
-Battling heteronormativity through workshops and discussions curated by and for Lesbian, Bisexual, and -Pansexual women artists of colour
-Shining a light on financial transparency and how it influences today's youth in the creative scene
-Visibility for black trans women and black non-binary creators in the literary and art world
-Engaging young girls of colour into the creative scene by creating interactive workshops in our community that are geared towards introducing visual arts to the younger generation.
The funding that we garner from this fundraiser will be geared towards the funding for the following projects:
"WORKSPACE" docu-series: "Workspace" is a docu series that focuses on female and femme identifying creatives of colour in their work environments and how those environments influence their art, their creative process, and who they are. Through this docu series, we aim to bring forward a wide variety of professionals and artists, from various social and economic backgrounds. The series is being shot and edited by Tam-anh Nnguyen and is set to debut at the end of May.
We are also working on curating pop-up shows and workshops in Washington, DC area, where we are based. This area is home to some of the most daring and talented female artists but due to gentrification and constant erasure, they are constantly being overshadowed. Through workshops and shows, we want to reinforce the idea that safe spaces for women and femme identifying artists are important in order for us to thrive in our careers and socially. Our next pop-up show in the DC area will be "The Bookshelf", a show celebrating written work. Not only will we be showcasing art by women of colour from all over the District and the country, we'll have a kiosk of assorted books and publications from independent publishers and distros. They will available for free reading and taking, in order to promote independent print publishing. Also available will be: food and music. We plan on debuting this show in mid-June and will be taking it all over the country from New York, Texas, and California.
All funds garnered from this project will go towards paying for venues and spaces, buying equipment, and paying artists. A lot of people will be working towards bringing these projects to life and we want to make sure we pay them their dues.
As a token of our gratitude for donating $50 and above, we'll send you three copies of our zine, a limited edition poster, and assorted goodies. You get to pick which issues you want! Make sure you email us your address to claim your reward.
Thank you in advance for paying attention and for giving us the opportunity to create the art we want to see, the art that is needed!
For questions, concerns, or if you are interested in getting involved hit us up at [email redacted]
