ArmandoAid runs a school for children and adults at Oinofyta Refugee hotspot in Central Greece after the closing of borders back in March.
Every child has the right to access free primary education and most children stranded in refugee camps have been denied of this fundamental human right; refugee children have fled their homes and lives and some haven't been to school for years.
Our priority is to give a sense of normality and routine, giving the children a safe space to learn and express themselves as well as teaching them English, science and numeracy. The school has exceeded these goals and we are a forefront of child protection within the camp.
We are also running English classes for adults in the camp giving women and men an oportunity to learn a very useful language while they wait for their resettlement.
We have no official funding or support and are relying on personal donations and goodwill. Our most important asset is our volunteer teachers who are making a great difference to the lives of the children in the community.
Our main challenge is to continue finding sufficient funds to run our school. We are also running a campaing to help fully qualified teacher volunteers with their living expenses so they can stay for longer.
Your money will also pay for a daily piece of fruit for every child attending the school, paper and ink for our printers, school materials, repairs and the many other necessary expenses incurred on a daily basis.
The school services about 200 students on a daily basis and the school continues to grow. Soon we will be opening learning facilities for teenagers too.
