Between listening to Grandpa in the hospital and Grandma in the living room the next evening we were able to piece together their horrific series of events.

Around 8:30pm on that Thursday night Grandpa saw a man walking up their porch towards the back door. He approached the nearest window expecting the man to knock on the door. Instead, after seeing Grandpa through the window the man smashed through the small window with a crow bar and hit Grandpa hard over the head while demanding repeatedly for his keys. My Grandfather rushed from the room to his bedroom to get his gun but by the time he could get it from his closet, unsheathe it and load it the man had forced his way through two locked doors and repeatedly hit grandpa over the head with the crow bar and then proceeded to stab him in the abdomen with an eight inch bowie knife.

Grandma, hearing the ruckus, poked her head out the front door and saw the back door of their L- shaped house ajar. She entered through the forced open door and saw Grandpa lying in blood on the kitchen floor. Grandma reports that she could hear the intruder somewhere behind her in the adjacent living room still exclaiming about the keys and Grandpa saying “I’ve been stabbed.”

Grandma then snuck down the hallway to her bedroom knowing the intruder was following her and tried to close her door behind her but clothes were blocking it so she leaned up against it just knowing the intruder was going to try and force entry. To her surprise, however, she heard the intruder pass by her door and down the hall towards the opposite side of the house. Quickly, she retrieved her loaded gun out of her closet and snuck out into the hallway. She could hear the intruder rummaging through her medicine cabinet but before she could take any further action he had turned the corner back into the hall and was headed towards her. He paused for a moment. Grandma doesn’t recall seeing his face but heard him say “gun” and she fired her first shot. Having been shot the intruder made a dash towards Grandma and the nearest door and she shot three more times.

Grandma, still carrying the gun, rushed to my Uncles’ bedroom and woke him exclaiming that she had just shot someone. My uncle checked that the intruder was dead then convinced Grandma to put the gun down and call 911. Grandpa had miraculously carried himself onto the porch. My Uncle recalls asking him to see how bad the wound was and when Grandpa lifting his hands away it was a horrible sight. My Uncle had exclaimed to Grandma that “he’s holding his guts in!”

Grandpa was taken in an ambulance into Sultan where he was air lifted to Harbor View Medical Center. Grandma was required to stay at the scene and answer questions until the detectives released her. They quickly gathered what items the police would allow and rushed to the hospital to be with Grandpa.

Grandpa spent that evening in the operation room where they repaired his organs and tried to control the swelling in his head. We were so afraid of the effects of the head trauma he had suffered but the next morning the doctors reported that the cat scan was clear and when Grandpa woke up he was able to recall the previous evenings events.

We have quizzed Grandma over and over again about how she was able to keep her head about her and make the decisions that kept them all alive. She explains to us that “never in my life did I think I would have to take another, but I had no choice, I had to save my family.” We always knew she was tough, I mean we’ve been teasing her that she was a “Honey Badger” for years now!

Now begins the process of piecing their health, home and security back together again. They have estimated a six month recovery period for our Grandfather and Grandma has been working tirelessly to get their house and lives back into livable conditions. They’re facing medical and repair expenses that will continue to remind them of this traumatic life changing event for the rest of ever. Please help us to shorten their recovery time by providing the financial means to pay their medical bills, replaced blood soaked carpet, repair windows and doors and give them peace of mind and security.
