Herons of the World Workshop

Biology and Conservation of Herons of the World at the Waterbird Society Annual Meeting
------------------------------------------------------------------

Help us bring two important researchers from Madagascar and India who work on highly threatened heron species to the US to present their work at the Heron Symposium of the Waterbird Society meeting

Rivo Rabarisoa works with the Madagascar (Malagasy) Heron and the Madagascar (Malagasy) Pond Heron for Asity Madagascar (Birdlife International); both of these species are listed as Endangered by IUCN.

Himadri Mondal is with the Zoological Survey of India and works with the White-bellied Heron. This heron is listed as Critically Endangered by IUCN and is the most threatened heron species in the world.

Our Symposium is entitled “The Biology and Conservation of Herons of the World”. It is comprised of a full day of oral presentations, a full day workshop on conservation issues and the implementation of Action Plans for various species. It is critically important to have these two researchers present their efforts and results directly addressing issues with these endangered species; with their experience and expertise, they will contribute greatly to the implementation of Actions Plans for other heron species.

More info
The Waterbird Society is a professional society of biologists, researchers, conservationists, students, and others from 31 countries interested in the behavior, ecology, and conservation of waterbirds. We meet annually to discuss research and conservation issues of waterbirds.

In 2016, we will hold our 40th annual meeting in North Carolina, and will be hosting the first ever symposium and workshop on the Biology and Conservation of Herons of the World. We would like to bring in a limited number of selected authorities from Africa, Asia, and South America to represent topics and issues that we do not broadly discuss in North America and Europe. Unfortunately, most waterbird researchers in those areas cannot afford to travel to the U.S. without significant financial assistance.

As a non-profit organization, we have a tight and limited budget, but we would very much appreciate the opportunity to bring these scientists and managers from other parts of the world to our meeting. We will be thankful for all donations…and in the U.S., such donations are tax deductible!
