2015 WSWA Girls Team Washington (GTW) is Washington's national cadet & junior women's freestyle wrestling team. GTW will compete at USA Wrestling's 2015 Asics Vaughan Women's Freestyle Championship and Dual Team Championship in July. This tournament is the premier freestyle wrestling event in the country for high school girls.
This year's fundraising campaign honoree is Washington Girl, Melissa Simmons. Melissa earned junior individual national champion titles for GTW in 2004 and 2005. A native of Ridgefield, WA , she continued her wrestling career at Oklahoma City University. OCU is one of the top women's collegiate wrestling programs in the country. In 2008 Melissa became a university national champion and helped her team win 3 national team championships during her collegiate career. She became a FILA university national champion in 2011 while at OCU. In 2013, Melissa became the WSWA's first female Women's Director and Coach of Girls Team Washington. In 2014, Melissa coached USA's University Women's World Team to 6 medals at the University World Championships in Hungary. She is the Director of Operations for the wrestling program at North Carolina State University.
Like Melissa, many of the girls competing at this year's nationals will go on to compete in college and possibly a U.S. national or world team.
In 2014, Girls Team Washington earned a combined 5 individual Cadet & Junior national titles and 20 all-American honors. Our Team Rainier dual team earned 6th place and our St. Helens dual team became champions when they beat California in the finals.
The total cost of the trip for each girl is approximately $1300. This incudes, airfare, lodging, ground transportation, registration, meals, and uniform costs.
Please join Melissa in helping 2015 WSWA Girls Team Washington reach our fundraising goal of $8,000. This money will be used for the teams lodging and ground transportation expenses.
Thank you for supporting girls, wrestling and big dreams!
