200Km Walk for Cancer Challenge

I have set myself the challenge of walking 200 kilometres over the month of March while undergoing my treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I will be completing this challenge to fundraise for the Irish Cancer Society and the Oncology Day Ward via the Mater Foundation.
My aim with this challenge is to raise much needed funds for these two charities and to raise awareness around lymphoma while also challenging myself to keep active during my chemotherapy. My goal is to walk 200 kilometres spread out over the month, there is no set distance per day but the total distance over the month will be 200km. I’m sure there will be days where the chemo fatigue will be trying to get the better of me and this challenge will get me out of the house. I will also be inviting my friends and family to join in on this challenge with a number of communal walks being organized over the month.
Since being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 27 my life has been a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve had to take time out from work, and transition from working as a doctor, to being a patient in the same hospital. I will be receiving chemotherapy every two weeks for six months in total. I’ve been getting my chemotherapy for the last 6 weeks on the oncology day ward in the Mater hospital and have witnessed first hand the amazing work that their devoted staff do every day. With massively increasing numbers of cancer patients there is a significant strain on the unit, which is the reason I have decided to donate half the money I raise directly to the oncology day ward.
Despite the inevitable upset of this diagnosis, I have been blown away by the incredible outpourings of support from all the people around me. In many ways I have been extremely lucky - my lymphoma is early stage, there is a treatment available, and my type of cancer is curable in an extremely high percentage of cases.
Many of my friends have already said they want to join me in this challenge, and I invite anyone to join us. I will keep you all updated on my progress during this challenge.
