"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." ~ Lao Tzu

Hope Presbyterian Church at Lake Nona and Washington Shores Presbyterian Church in Orlando continue to nurture our blossoming friendship by together logging 2 Million Steps -- approximately 1,000 miles -- for change in August 2018.

Utilizing step trackers via fitness bands, smart phones or inexpensive pedometers available at our churches, we will record our steps to raise awareness and simultaneously, we hope, $1,000 for The Bail Project.

Participants may either walk for change, contribute funds, or do both.

More about The Bail Project:
Low-income people and people of color disproportionately remain in jail while the wealthy buy their liberty.

On any given night in America, 450,000 people are in local jails without being convicted of a crime — the vast majority of whom are there solely due to financial hardship. That’s about the total number of people who live in Miami.

These people are disproportionately of color, and for them, there are only two choices: Plead guilty to their charge, or sit in jail until backlogged court systems can hear their case — which can often take weeks or months. This isn’t how bail is supposed to work.

Bail was originally intended to serve as an incentive for people to return to court — you come back, you get your money. It wasn’t intended to keep people in jail who couldn’t afford to pay.

How Your Gifts Help
The Bail Project team identifies people in need, and pays their bail so they can fight their cases without feeling pressured to plead guilty. They then call and text them to remind them to return to court on their appointed date. Experience shows they almost universally return. To date, more than half the people for whom TBP paid bail with their pilot project have gone on to be found innocent or have charges dismissed.

With The Bail Project's funding model, a single dollar can be recycled and reused to pay bail 2-3 times per year. When someone pays bail and comes back for court their bail payment is refunded; it basically functions like a deposit. That means donations to The Bail Project go into a revolving fund: They receive a donation, use it to pay someone’s bail, they show up for their court dates, TBP gets the bail payment back, they use the money for another bail payment.

After GoFundMe deducts transaction fees, every penny you give helps to set captives free so they can later have their day in court.

GoFundMe will directly send accumulated funds, via PayPal, to The Bail Project -- a 501 (c) 3 already registered with GoFundMe and PayPal.

Time Frame
We seek to generate $1,000 for The Bail Project between now and 8/31/2018 -- approximately six weeks before our scheduled field trip to the new National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.

Help us get fit together -- and to makes strides for change, liberty and racial healing as a team!

Thank you for your consideration!
