Wheelchair accessible vehicle for Nathaniel

A little bit about us,
We live in Victoria B-C, we and our families originally both come from New-Brunswick, we have been posted here with the military in 2010. We have been together for 12 years. We are now parents of 3 boys aged 4, 7 and 9 years old. Like everybody we have our ups and downs but we never thought that we would become special needs parents.
Nathaniel was diagnosed at the age of 8 with KAT6A. it is an extremely rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder that is not inherited from the parents. While there is some resemblance in the people affected It still affects every individual differently which means that Nathaniel is one of a kind. He often gets seizures, he did have to go through some surgeries through his life and will still require a few in the near future. Nathaniel is also high risk for aspiration pneumonia which often leads to a few days of hospitalization and affect his quality of life.
To this day Nathaniel moves around in a wheelchair with the help of a caregiver. He does not have the skills and ability to do a lot of things for himself. He is very dependant on all daily activities such as; feeding, dressing and mobility. He is non verbal and he is currently going to therapy twice a week to try to find ways to communicate but we have not yet found something that works for him. He is also receiving other services and therapies from his school. He goes to Victor school wich he does enjoy as he gets to be around friends with similar skills and challenges.
We are reaching out for help today because we currently own a vehicle that does not meet Nathaniel’s needs. To this day we still have to carry him to his car seat and lift the wheelchair by hand in the truck of the vehicle. We have been trying constantly for 2 years to try to save or come up with a way to afford this vehicle but we have come to the reality that this necessity will not be possible without help. Mom is only able to work part time as it is not possible to have a full time job as Nathaniel needs to be driven to appointments quite often. We are at the point where Nathaniel has been too heavy and tall for us for a while and to keep going onto this path. The vehicle that we have now is not big enough to accommodate our family’s needs even with a wheelchair accessible modification. We often hurt our backs or shoulders which puts us to rest for a few days if we make a mistake on a transfer. Transfers in and out of a vehicle like we have been doing also pose a risk to Nathaniel’s safety.
Nathaniel is dependent on a vehicle to take him to therapy, to his school, as well as all the medical appointments that he needs to attend. We are hoping to get help from the public and with multiple fundraising organizations to help us achieve this necessity so that we can access a better lifestyle. We are a very active family, Nathaniel loves animals, music and being in nature, camping season is his favorite. We are hoping to be able to keep fulfilling those activities as a family. It has taken a serious toll on our family to watch our oldest son not being able to do the things like every able child and we are asking that a financial burden might be lifted so that we can give him the best of life as he deserves.
We are bonded to stay close to home as we do not have enough room for all the equipment and all family members. If we go to Vancouver for specialist appointments, we have to leave our other 2 sons behind with friends. If we go camping, we need to stay close and do 2 trips to carry everything. We want to be able to move all together as a family without barriers.
If we reached the full amount for this vehicle, we will gladly donate our current vehicle to another special needs family who needs it.
Notre histoire
Nous sommes originaires de la péninsule acadienne au Nouveau-Brunswick. Nous avons été localisées a Victoria en Colombie-Britannique depuis 2010. Nous sommes parents de 3 garçons âgée de 4, 7 et 9 ans. Comme toutes les familles nous vivons des hauts et des bas mais jamais nous aurions penser être des parents avec un enfant a besoins spéciaux.
Nathaniel a récemment été diagnostiqué KAT6A avec autiste profond. KAT6A est une condition génétique très rare qui engendre des retards psychomoteurs intellectuelle. Sa condition lui cause souvent des convulsions, il a eu recours à certaines opérations au cours des années et devra en recevoir d’autre en vieillissant aussi. Il est à haut risque d’attraper des infections pulmonaires ce qui engendre des hospitalisations et affecte sa qualité de vie.
À ce jour Nathaniel se déplace en fauteuil roulant avec l’aide d’un accompagnant. Il est complètement dépendant sur tout ce qui touche la motricité global (manger, s’habiller, se déplacer, ect). Il ne parle pas et nous n’avons toujours pas trouvé de façon pour lui de nous communiquer ses besoins mais il continue d’aller a des thérapies en espérant pouvoir trouver un moyen. Il reçoit aussi des thérapies et services a son école.
Nous demandons pour de l’aide aujourd’hui car notre véhicule ne répond pas au besoin de Nathaniel. Nous devons encore le transporter dans nos bras jusqu’au véhicule et nous devons transporter la chaise roulante dans la valise de la voiture. Nous avons tenté depuis 2 ans d’économiser et de trouver un moyen pour obtenir un véhicule adapter mais la réalité et que nous ne pourrons pas obtenir ce véhicule sans aides. La mère de Nathaniel peut seulement avoir un emploi à temp partiel étant donné que Nathaniel à beaucoup de rendez-vous lié à sa condition. Nous sommes à un point ou Nathaniel est déjà trop lourd et trop grand pour que nous continuons dans cette direction. Le véhicule que nous avons présentement n’est pas asser grand pour accommoder tous les besoins de notre famille même avec modification pour chaise roulante. Nous nous blessant souvent au dos et aux épaules quand nous fessons des transfères. Le transférer dans le véhicule de nos bras pose aussi un risque a la sécurité de Nathaniel.
Nathaniel dépend d’une voiture pour le conduire à ses thérapie et rendez-vous. Il est impossible pour notre famille de porter la dette d’un plus gros véhicule avec une rampe adapté. Nous espérant pouvoir avoir un peu d’aide du public et de quelques Organisations pour pouvoir répondre au besoin de transport de Nathaniel pour lui donner une meilleure qualité de vie. Nous avons besoin d'un vehicle qui va nous durer 10 ans et plus. Il est difficile de voir Nathaniel ne pas avoir la capacité de faire ce que les autres enfants de son âge peuvent faire. Nous demandons de l’aide pour que Nathaniel puisse avoir la meilleure des vies avec sa condition.
Si nous obtenons la somme totale pour le véhicule, nous allons offrir notre véhicule que nous avons présentement à une autre famille à besoin spéciaux qui en aurait besoin.
