1984 Printing Fire Recovery Fund

Early on March 21st a fire struck the warehouse that has been home to our 11-year old woman-owned business, 1984 Printing. The fire  began in an adjoining warehouse where it claimed two lives, and quickly spread out to our building. We are so grateful to have survived the blaze, thanks to the amazing concrete ceilings in our space.

We suffered severe smoke and water damage to paper stock, books, zines, and other printing projects, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars in losses. We're still assessing the damages, but thankfully, 1984's most expensive and loved 4-color press was not directly under where the water rained in, so hopefully once all the flooding is completely dried, it will power on and print again.

Our business relies on a lot of fragile and expensive things like paper and machines, but most of all it relies on a huge community of people who care about making the world better.

We're asking you to help get us back on our feet so we can keep doing this work that we love for people and causes that we care deeply about.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all so much. We love you, and we couldn't stay in business without you! Please donate if you can, and check your smoke detectors, please!

Love,
Amy & Richard (and the little dogs Peanut & Honey)

Hi all. It's been a while since the last update, and some good stuff and other really not so good stuff has been going on. Amy has spent much of the past two months in Ohio caring for her dad, who is seriously ill, and is about to head back. Richard is still printing... but the final word has come down: We are going to have to move out of our building. The red tag isn't going away, the rainy season is coming, the building's future is uncertain, and there's still a big hole in the roof. So we are looking for a new warehouse space. If you know about any buildings in the East Bay (industrial zoned warehouse space with three phase, is the exact jargon), or know someone who can help with financing, we would be most grateful and will pursue every lead. We're determined to keep this going! Having already made it through the immediate aftermath of the fire, with your help, gives us faith that we'll be able to find a way. Thank you, friends.

What a week! A bunch of East Bay bands, including Green Day (!) played at 924 Gilman as a benefit for everyone affected by the fire. We had the honor to print these beautiful posters, which you can buy on our website: http://1984printing.com/store

Thank you all again. Our printing is slowly starting to get back up to speed, and we wouldn't be doing anything close to what we are without your help.

Hello everyone! The big news is that we are printing again...slowly but surely. We're finally finishing jobs from last month, and also taking on new jobs (just so long as you don't have a hard deadline).

There's more -- we put up a blog post about it! http://www.1984printing.com/2015/04/a-month-after-the-fire/

Thank you all so much ... we aren't sure we would be getting back on our feet without all your help.

1984 Printing is printing again! Just did some simple black record inserts but moving onto full color posters first thing Wednesday morning. If we look at the concrete ceiling above our press we can see how hot the fire got above us where it burned off paint -yet another reminder of how lucky we got. Happy to be alive and happy to still be printing!
Back in action!
