16th and Shotwell/Mission/SF Fire

Dear Community,
My name is Raul Pacheco and I am a fellow Mission community member and an advocate in mí comunidad. I was raised on 16th St. and Shotwell, have volunteered on 16th St. and Shotwell at Mission Neighborhood Health Center and have worked serving the community for 5 years on 16th St. and Mission St. through Asociación Mayab and Indígena Health and Wellness Collaborative, a branch of Instituto Familiar de la Raza.
On Sunday, November 8th at approximately 7:45 am a fire on 16th st. and Shotwell st. started in the Rolling Stocks tire auto repair shop. Unfortunately it caught on to the apartment building right next door causing serious damage.
Twenty-nine tenants including five children and myself all have been displaced. Thanks to the Red Cross's debit cards some of us are temporarily staying in hotels and settling with buying things to meet our basic needs. Others of us are staying with loved ones. One family lost everything and many of our possessions are still in the building soaked with water for almost a week now.
As a community advocate in the Mission I ask of our fellow leaders and allies to help the displaced families, all Latino residents, start a new path. Most have lived there more than 35 years, one tenant out of the six units having lived there for over 40 years and many learned to walk on those floors. I believe that the community can put together their resources and these families can be helped to start over. We plan to stick together and support one another to return to our homes. Mi nombre es Raúl Pacheco y soy un miembro y defensor de mi comunidad “La Misión”en San Francisco. Me crié en las calle 16 y Shotwell, he actuado como voluntario en la clínica Mission Neighborhood Health Center/Centro de Salud del Barrio de la Misión y los últimos cinco años he trabajado en dos organizaciones: la Asociación Mayab y la Indígena Health & Wellness Collaborative, La Colaboración de Salud y Bienestar Indígena, una rama del Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Inc.
El domingo 8 de noviembre, alrededor de las 7:45 a.m., prendió fuego el taller de reparación de llantas “Rolling Stocks” en las calles 16 y Shotwell. Por desgracia éste se extendió al edificio de junto donde yo vivía con mis padres y hermanos hasta ese día cuando evacuamos y causó graves daños.
De los 29 inquilinos, entre ellos cinco niños, todos hemos sido desplazados. Por ahora algunos estamos alojados en hoteles, otros quedandonos con familiares o conocidos; todos luchando por conseguir cosas para satisfacer nuestras necesidades básicas. Lo que está en el edificio está empapado por el agua desde que apagaron el incendio, una familia lo perdió todo.
En este difícil momento hago un llamado a nuestros gobernantes, aliados, líderes, compañeros, familiares y amigos para que entre todos logremos ayudar a todas estas familias latinas a iniciar un nuevo camino. La mayoría ha vivido allí más de 35 años y una familia más de 40. Muchos aprendieron a caminar en esos pisos. Yo creo que actuando unidos podemos lograr juntar los recursos para que estas familias regresen a sus hogares. Les damos las gracias por su valioso apoyo.
