Last year I watched this video about Travis Mills and the foundation he started and was immensely inspired by his determination and drive to turn a personal tragedy into an opportunity to help others. This inspiration has led me to embark on an epic challenge cycling from the top of Alaska to the bottom of Patagonia, traversing the entire north-south spanse of the Americas. I begin in July 2018 and will journey roughly 15,000 miles. Along with trying to complete such a monumental challenge, I am devoting this time to raising awareness about wounded combat veterans and the high number of veteran suicides each year. As a former Marine who served on a combat deployment, I am inspired by the selfless sacrifice of these men and women whose road ahead is filled with the daily fight to keep pushing after they come home.

My goal is to raise $35,000 (minus initial equipment and logistical costs needed to kick-off the ride) which will be donated to the Travis Mills Foundation to assist wounded combat veterans who suffered multiple amputations from injuries in combat as well as similar charities combating veteran suicide. The Foundation’s mantra of “Never give up, never quit!” coincides directly with my personal belief that no matter how big or insurmountable the challenge in front of you seems, as long as you never give up, never quit, and take it one day at a time, you can achieve anything you devote yourself to. Along the long road south, I hope that my efforts and funds raised will help them recover and find ways that allow them to achieve all their goals despite their injuries.

As Michelangelo once said, “The greatest danger for most of us lies not in setting our mark too high and falling short; but in setting it too low and achieving our mark.” I live my life by the mantra, and through my undertakings, hope to inspire others, wounded warriors and others alike, to set and strive toward their goals even when they seem impossible. Your contributions can greatly assist in this cause and this fundraising campaign will remain open throughout the duration of the challenge. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Challenge update:

Next week I fly up to Deadhorse, Alaska on the Arctic Ocean to kick off the ride, beginning with a 500 mile stretch along the Dalton Highway, which you might know as the road from the show "Ice Road Truckers." The first 500 miles has no resupply points so it may be slow and painful with all the extra food weight but I did my last training ride this morning with all the gear on the bike and we're both (me and the bike; name still tbd) feeling strong and ready.

I have been posting updates to my Instagram, @americasupertramp, so feel free to follow along there. If you haven't been following, there have been some amazing sponsors and donors who have helped out with a bunch of the gear needed for the challenge, included an awesome "gravel/adventure/touring" bike from Specialized and all the bikepacking bags needed for the trip.

Thank you so much again to everyone who has donated to the campaign and offered kind words of support and encouragement. Please keep sharing with friends and family and on your social media. Lastly, if you or anyone you know might be near the route and would like to cycle along with me for a small portion I would love the company and support. Feel free to message here or on Instagram to coordinate details.
