Newton's Law of Mass, Team 12897, is a community-based robotics team from Newton, Massachusetts. The team consists of passionate high school and middle school students who will compete at the local, state, and hopefully national level for the 2018-2019 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge  (FTC) Robotics season.

Fully student-run, we have 13 enthusiastic members on our FTC Robotics team. Throughout the year, we brainstorm, design, build, code, and document to produce a robust robot. Using this robot, we compete at tournaments against other teams and hope to qualify for the 2018-2019 World Championship in Detroit. Additionally, this fall we plan on starting and running a program for middle school girls interested in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math). These girls will compete in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) and get first-hand experience of what it is like to be an engineer.

During the 2017-2018 season, we won the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award for our out of the box thinking and exceptional robot design. We also won our first local qualifying competition and earned an invitation to the Massachusetts State Championship where we finished fourth out of the top 36 teams in the state! Moreover, we competed in the Vermont Regional Championship, where we came in second place, just a few points shy of qualifying for last year’s World Championship in Detroit. This year, we are motivated to do even better!

Robotics has a positive impact on the community and our students. Our members learn engineering and design skills and develop leadership, business, public speaking, coaching, and communication skills to help us become the next leaders in our community and the STEM world beyond. In addition, our team conducts outreach activities, volunteering our time back to local STEM community activities teaching younger kids about the amazing experiences they can have working with robots. Our team also has big plans for outreach this season, such as promoting FIRST and robotics at several fairs and helping other students in both FTC and the robotics community.

Your donation matters! As a not-for-profit, we rely solely on donations and sponsorships. Your donation will go towards paying for registration and competition fees. Additionally, we plan on using your donation to buy parts and supplies, ranging from motors to whiteboard markers. While our goal of $20,000 may be ambitious, we believe that we can achieve it with your help. After all, the motion-tracking sensors we need to complete our robust autonomous position tracking algorithm are expensive! However, we absolutely do NOT spend money willy-nilly. Every purchase must be authorized by 5 members and a team captain before it can go through. We are also entirely transparent with our financials, a copy of which can be found on our website.

Support of our team offers many benefits
such as exclusive chats with team members, our monthly newsletter, videos of our progress, and even a complimentary T-Shirt for donations over $100 dollars. We treat our sponsors like family.
