- 1,000 books for Mateves School

Donation protected
The Mateves High School is located in Arusha, a city located in Northern Tanzania in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. It opened its doors in 2006 to just over 100 students. As the school had no classrooms, space had to be borrowed from a neighbor.

Since then, Mateves has taken in hundreds of new students and refurbished several facilities to teach classes in. The school provides English and Kiswahili bilingual education. Its motto, “Education is the best inheritance”, is proudly displayed outside the facilities, inspiring students and teachers to continue giving their very best.

The Mateves High School receives only limited funding from the government, making it very difficult to meet the demands for school supplies, qualified teachers and to meet the requirement set by the government to find the necessary resources to build laboratories. Indeed, in 2015, the president of Tanzania mandated that every school must find the resources to build physics, chemistry and biology laboratories. Although this is a great initiative to encourage science studies in an underdeveloped country, it extends the financial burden far beyond the school’s capacity. Parents are also expected to cover tuition fees, which many cannot afford.

Although the school could certainly make use of any and all donations, the most urgent need at this time is for school books about computer studies. With the funds collected – we hope to supply 1,000 books to the students. This will allow one book for every two students.

Mountain Madness and African Environments have been supporting the school to the best of their ability for the past years, we hope you can join us in this effort!

The books required are the following:

-          2005 Information and computer studies for Secondary schools in Tanzania (Form 1 & 2) by Elias Magguttah

-          Computer studies (Form 1-4) by S. Mburu and G. Chemwa

Two computers were donated to the school earlier this year - next will be the books!
