100 Back D4 Champ Needs Help

Donation protected
Katrionna Furness moved from her small town of Mammoth Lakes, Ca one month before her 16th birthday in order to pursue her life long goal of being on a year round swim team. Kat moved in with her Grandma and Grandpa in Fillmore, California, and joined the Buenaventura Swim Club, half hour away. Against all odds, this small town girl with the heart of a champion just won the 100 Back in Division 4 CIF's with a time of 59.68.

She caught the swimming bug when she was in the 9/10 age group for swimming on her seasonal swim team, the Mammoth Sharks. With no technique, not even a back stroke flip turn, she managed to attend the Junior Olympics in Concord and finish her 50 back with a time standard called a "PRT" at the time. Faster than a JO time, faster than a Far Western time. She went to finals, finishing in eighth place as the first Mammoth Shark to ever do so.

The Sharks have a three month long summer season due to only having an outdoor facility located in the high Sierra's where the avg snowfall is between 200-500 inches annually. Kat begged and begged to move to a place that had a year round swim club. She was only ten so we weren't ready to let her leave us.

Daniel and I have not been in a position to relocate. When Kat asked, once again, to move and give swimming full time a try in July of 2017, we spent hours debating every possible outcome. We finally gave the green light and she moved in with Daniel's parents, Fillmore residents,  Bert and Wanda Castel de oro. We figured that she could never look back and say we didn't give her a shot...That we didn't do everything we could to fulfill her dreams.

The whole family is pitching in financially to make this all work. Daniel and I have two other children who are also heavily involved with sports. We do not ever want to tell Kat that we can't continue to support, (financially) her dream. A dream she is working herself to the bone in order to fulfill. Katrionna drives a Toyota Camry with over 300,000 miles to and from practice each day. She even swam doubles, (Club and High school) for four months, while attending Fillmore High School. That's a lot of gas money required as the pool is 1/2 hr away. She constantly needs new gear...$700 tech suits, goggles, other swim equipment. There are monthly club dues, gym dues, swim meet fees, travel money for both her and I for her swim meets, (I live 300 miles away from her now) and the cost to feed an athlete is a small fortune in and of itself! Kat is extremely close to Junior National swim times on a few events...She is dying to attend and that will be plane tickets and even more travel money.

Her goal is to get some sort of notice from a college for swimming. If you are able to help support her dream, you won't regret it. She is a small town girl with big dreams and won't let you down.
