<div>On April 10th, I left town for a month and a half long buying trip. It’s half working holiday (the thrill of finding and rescuing old stuff), half reminder to not let your business completely consume you, and to take some time in this short life for adventure. I work all the time. Imagine leaving town with that as your goal and then your shop catches on fire.

<div>On April 17th, asleep in bed in Kodaka, South Dakota, my shop's security alarm went off. I woke up to the alarm phone call that my store was on fire. The security cameras were so smoky I could only see flashlights and the reflective vests of SFFD. This is my actual worst nightmare.

<div>My first thought was - I hope it hasn’t spread to the building and no one is hurt. My second thought - call Karlie - NOW and ask her to please RUN to the shop. My third thought was - what will I do from here, 2000 miles away, if it’s all gone? And how can I ever fix this from so far away? And what’s the fastest way to get home from the middle of nowhere? And then I started to cry. If we don’t have inventory, we don’t have a shop. And if we don’t have a shop, that’s 6 people without a job. Imagining that all the old things I’ve personally picked out for a whole store - they lived this long only to burn up - taking my whole magical Vacation with it. All the memories of 13 years. Gone?

<div>Our North Beach neighbors have come to our rescue. Turns out the fire was stopped almost as soon as it started because three people called 911. S&amp;S grocery, our neighbors, saved the day. Thank you to the other 2 folks that also called in - I don’t know who you are, but thank you.

<div>The light fixture in the dressing room caught fire, and the plastic fixture slowly burned, dropping to the floor and burning a rug that was over tile. That old rug and that old light fixture saved us. Slow-burning wool and melting plastic make a lot of soot and smoke, but the fire didn’t (thank god) jump to the curtains. But it made a ton of smoke, and the neighbors saw it.

<div>We got so lucky. There was soot and smoke damage everywhere, and a big black hole on the floor. We really got so lucky.

<div>Since the second I called her, Karlie, my shop's manager - but probably more one of the dearest people in my life - has been taking care of it. “KK, don’t come home, there’s nothing you can do here that we can’t. Stay on your trip, we can fix it.” I didn’t come home because I knew she was right. She’s been spearheading this operation. She dealt with the firemen. She thanked the neighbors. She organized a plan of action, a cleanup crew, supplies. She’s FaceTiming me and calming me down, and well, she’s a hero. We have another hero - Riley - another earth angel here at Vacation. These two haven’t stopped since the fire. Quite possibly the best attitude and enthusiasm, and let me tell you guys - I can’t imagine a world without both of them. ‘Employees’ aren’t supposed to care this much. I don’t even have the right words for the gratitude I have for them, and I don’t have enough money to pay them what they deserve for this.

<div>I am realizing that a credit card should not be used as an insurance policy - and that an insurance policy doesn’t work for what it’s supposed to. After calls and some basic math, it will end up costing more to file a claim. That system is completely broken.

<div><strong>I need to pay my employees extra for their time and effort.</strong>

</div>

<div><strong>I need to pay some of the volunteers that have put in 10+ hours each.</strong>

</div>

<div><strong>I rented ‘air scrubbers’ for 4 days.</strong>

<div><strong>No shop income for 4 days and counting (this is major).</strong>

</div>

<div><strong>Cleaning supplies + cleanup solutions and tools + laundry detergents and smoke clearing solutions.</strong>

</div>

<div><strong>Dry cleaning for all inventory that can’t be washed (that’s all the antique and true vintage pieces, all our silks, all our antique quilts and textiles).</strong>

</div>

<div><strong>Repainting the shop + supplies to paint.</strong>

</div>

<div><strong>Replacing the door frame SFFD had to break to enter.</strong>

<div><strong>Unbelievable amount of laundry.</strong>

<div>The outpouring from the community has repeatedly brought me to tears. Feeling so helpless and out of control, and then miraculously things are under control - everyone is safe, my staff will still have jobs, my shop will stay open. Guilt for not being there every single second, and I’m proud of myself for letting go, a huge step, and letting someone else take the reins. That’s exactly the lesson I left on this trip to learn, although I would have appreciated a less stressful method to learn it!!

Help VACATION recover from a shop fire

<div>As long time Altadena residents, they were forced to evacuate with their son, dog, two cats, and so many other residents of their beloved community. Unable to go home, it has been a struggle to get through the displacement.
</div>

<div>The toll this is taking on them financially and emotionally is tremendous. Though they would never ask for help themselves, I am asking on their behalf.
</div>

</div>
<div>Their house survived but much of the contents are unsalvageable. As they are both independently employed, their house is their work space and facing these financial setbacks with no home base has been a difficult task.
</div>

<div>Through the generosity of friends, they've been able to keep a roof over their heads but it is now clear that they'll need more semi-permanent lodging and work space as they try and figure out how to move forward through the aftermath.
</div>

<div>While it is uncomfortable to ask for help, especially as so many have lost so much, Imaad and Kristina and family are in need as well.

Fat Tony: I Lost My Home Today

<div>Hi my name is Tiffany.  I am 44 years old. I need a double lung transplant. It's scary, even daunting, to contemplate. As you can imagine even with insurance this is a very expensive procedure. I was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease in July 2019 and in July of this year 2021 I was told I have Short Telomere Syndrome which led to idiopathic familial Pulmonary Fibrosis. I have had genetic testing and have been found to have the TERT/TERC mutation as well as STS. My aunt died of Pulmonary fibrosis. I have been on oxygen 24/7 since April of this year. Thankfully my oxygen requirements remain stable at 2L O2 at rest and 8L O2 on exertion. I have 16% respiratory function. I am taking Ofev and I am enrolled in a clinical trial at TGH. I have less than a year and a half to live/transplant time. I need a transplant to live. I love life and I want to live. I have not been placed on the transplant list as of yet because my BMI needs to be under 30. I am working on it and I am well on my way. I have lost 20 lbs this month! SS disability and Medicaid will not cover a lung transplant. I need to remain commercially insured. My employer does not offer short or long term disability at this time. So I am toughing it out to keep my insurance.

Tiffany needs a lung transplant

<div>In August, Sarah was given the serious and shocking medical diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Within days, surgery and months of treatment were being planned, and Sarah and Matt immediately needed to stop working to focus on Sarah’s health and recovery. The out-of-pocket medical expenses for specialized treatment and the weeks of going without work will leave Sarah and Matt without sufficient income for some time. Any funds collected will go directly toward medical expenses and paying for day-to-day living while Sarah recovers. Matt and Sarah will share more personal updates as Sarah's road to recovery stabilizes.

It's Sean! <br /><br />Sean and Rikki have been in the Vintage game for years- and they are really some of the best people out there. <br /><br />On Monday September 25, Sean was doing what he does- picking for treasures when he fell out of a 12 foot loft, landed on his back and fractured his spine in three places. Yikes. Sean spent a few days at Sutter Hospital in Sacramento with some very rad friends keeping him in good company and spirits. He's lucky to have some more very awesome friends letting him stay with them while he recovers from the initial shock and extreme pain- all of this is here in California- 1500 miles from his home where Rikki and the kids are. <br /><br />Sean, Rikki and their two sons live in Montana- and together they have Roslyn Trading. Rikki runs the online shop from home with the kids, and Sean drives sixteen hours to the West Coast - MONTHLY to source and sell at Fleas. These two have been leading the game of "craziest shirt you've ever seen for sale" for YEARS.  <br /><br />You know what you can't do with a broken back? Drive anywhere- unload and load a van- lift anything- climb stairs-pick up your kids, shovel snow- sit in a bathtub -all of it. It's about to get very really and super frustrating being on bed rest and mostly immobile for the next five months. And Sean's gotta get home first to Montana before he can start to recover. Once home- he's not going to be able to work- this leads to uncertainty and instability financially and that SUCKS. <br /><br />These guys aren't the go fund me type (a lot of us aren't- it's a humbling thing to ask for this kind of help) but an overwhelming amount of friends have already stepped up to offer any help, ask where they can donate-and here we are. <br /><br />Sean has insurance in Montana, his accident was in California- it's uncertain what the bills are gonna be- emergency room, CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, hospital visit, PT and recovery- it's gonna be a full time job for these guys navigating the expenses and it's shouldn't be. <br /><br />If you've ever met Sean and Rikki they've undoubtedly put a smile on your face and a few real Laugh till ya cry moments and just the best vibes every time. <div>In December our friend Drew was hospitalized and his diagnosis is VERY serious.

<div>A good friend to many, a Rad Dad, Pizza Ripper and all around loved guy Drew Cramer - AKA “Personal” for those who know him as the fearless leader of the Pizza Army - is in need of some serious DOUGH!

<div>After a number of procedures, consultations with specialists and medications, Drew is now recovering at home. There are many more procedures and appointments to come. Drew’s day to day since his hospitalization has been intense and his new job is now taking complete care of himself in hopes for the best possible outcome and recovery. He is unable to work. We are at the beginning stages of this journey, but we’re all confident that he can get through this with this really great support system of Family, Friends and Pizza fans.

<div>Drew's spirits are good and his sense of humor is still dark. ‘Last call’ was announced, the sound guy cut the PA and Drew hasn’t had a drink since his hospitalization in December. Just because there aren't pints of Newcastle Brown involved, it doesn't mean Drew can't still talk your ear off about Venom.

<div>Drew has given his life to rock and roll, and we all know the financial position this can put a rocker in. Drew thankfully does have medical coverage, however the medical bills and co-pays as well as the general cost of living are beginning to present a challenge, and Drew has started to dip into his personal pizza tips aka savings, and that’s not gonna last very long.

<div>At this point, Drew’s prognosis remains unknown and requires a lot of “wait and see”. We are all optimistic that with lots of rest, new medications, strict diet, and great doctors, the rocker we know and love will be doing what he does best again soon. Importantly there is a very real possibility of a major organ transplant in his future- and this will require at least 6 months of recovery time. Drew Needs Our Help (Getting a Transplant!)

<p>Meet Travis. Our silly, passionate, empathetic, fiercely loyal, Travis. We all have a "Travis" in our lives. Someone who will give you the shirt off their back. Someone who will drop everything to be at your side. Someone who keeps coming back. The person you want with you for the fun and the not so fun. We all have a "Travis"... and ours is in crisis.

<p>On Friday July 2nd, Travis was shot 6 times in the leg, arm, chest and abdomen on the front lawn of his girlfriend's home by an unknown shooter. Travis was unarmed and taking a lunch break while helping his friend get settled into her new home. The critical injuries resulted in the loss of his pancreas, spleen, kidney, and a portion of intestines and bowels. He was also shot in his dominant elbow and twice in his leg. One of the bullets currently sits millimeters from his spine.

<p>The unknown assailant is still out there. We don't believe Travis knew the shooter.
</p>

<p>Our Travis leads a peaceful life. He does not have enemies. He is a respectable, hard working, loving man who also happens to be tattooed. When you meet him, the rough exterior quickly melts and you see his authentic, silly self immediately.
</p>

<p>Travis needs help. We don't know what the road ahead looks like for him, but we do know that it will be long and difficult and expensive. All fundraising monies will go directly to helping Travis get back on his feet when he's released from the hospital.

Travis Lee's Recovery Fund

Our dear Camille passed away St. Patrick's Day of this year and we are mourning her loss from our shelter-in isolation.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the legacy of our dear friend is in peril and her legal executor is requesting financial support from us who care about Camille's work so as to ensure that the following objectives be properly resolved in the wake of her passing:<br /><br />- settle Camille's rents accrued during her hospitalization in all fairness to her landlord and roommates.<br />- promptly settle Camille's current Page Street storage unit payments before her belongings are recklessly disposed of.<br />- safely clear Camille's bedroom, preserving all Works of Art and related ephemera.<br />- upgrade Camille's storage for the next few months so that all her Works of Art be gathered in one place, inventoried and conserved.<br />- take actions to safeguard the archive with the proper institution.<br />- organize an exhibition or showcase honoring Camille's Life and Art in the months after Covid restrictions are lifted. <br /><br />Not only did Camille perform at CBGB's and Max's Kansas City in the 60's and 70's but she also pioneered female drag as Jack Savage. She also was the first (and only) woman to ever perform in the notorious private NYC club The Mineshaft in the late 70s, as is documented in the 1978 French film, New York City Inferno.
