<div>Ok. Many, if not all of you, have asked what you can do to help. And I probably politely said thank you, or made a joke, and never actually answered. Historically speaking I’m not good at this. I’ve learned a bit in the last few years, but it’s not exactly natural for me to ask for help. So here we are. Better late than never, finally letting you know what you can do to help.

<div>Five years ago, just before her fifth birthday, Lyla started having seizures. Not one seizure. Not a couple of seizures. Buckets of seizures. Sometimes 20 in a day. By March of 2020, she had been diagnosed with a rare genetic condition (CHD2 mutation) that causes epilepsy, cognitive disabilities, and autism. And while Lyla is an abundantly joyful and infectiously loving kiddo, she has endured more than 800 major seizures, countless ambulance rides, and more than is really fair to expect of nine years on this planet. I can tout the strength and the love that has gotten us through this, but the truth is this journey has at times taken us all down. Acute pain and prolonged uncertainty. A journey of self-discovery that none of us wanted to be on. But we are on it. We have failed more than 15 medications, and she had a VNS implanted in June 2020. But we have not managed to gain seizure control.

<div>So, on January 13th, five years and four days after her first seizure, Lyla will have the first of multiple brain surgeries to look to reduce the incidence of seizures she’s experiencing. This is a long process that requires multiple procedures and loads of recovery.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Here's what lies ahead.
</div>

</div>
<div>December 23rd, Lyla will have the battery replaced in her VNS, or her robot, as we so fondly talk about it. This is an outpatient surgery.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>December 30th, Lyla will have an anesthetized MRI to ensure clear and accurate imaging of her brain, prior to what comes next.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>January 13th, Lyla will begin her stereoelectroencephalography or SEEG. This includes a six-hour brain surgery where electrodes are implanted in her brain through incisions in the skull. The purpose is to identify where seizures originate. We will be staying in the hospital for (likely) two weeks while we attempt to map her seizure activity. This process is only successful if Lyla has multiple representative seizures while we are in the hospital. So, we will be trying to trigger seizures until we collect enough data to draw conclusions. We will likely take her off meds, flash bright lights in her face, deprive her of sleep, etc. We can leave the hospital once we have sufficient data. That could be as long as a month.

<div><strong>Translation: This is going to be miserable for everyone involved.</strong> Being in the hospital for two weeks is just generally terrible. I have heard that the electrodes are heavy and it can be uncomfortable to hold your head up. And triggering seizures is my personal hell. We’ve been fighting them for five years, so to deliberately try to have multiple seizures to collect the data is just going to be brutal.

<div>Late February/early March: Another brain surgery. Lyla will have a responsive neurostimulator or RNS placed as a deep brain stimulator or DBS. They will shave part of her hair and remove a portion of her skull to place the generator. They will connect the generator to the electrodes identified during the SEEG. The electrodes can sense abnormal activity in these seizure-prone areas and respond with stimulation that could shut down the seizure before it manifests for Lyla. This is a full-day brain surgery and a 2 week intensive recovery. Full recovery will take at least a month.

<div>May 2025: They will begin turning on the generator and attempting to program it to help reduce seizures. But this is a long game. While 30% of patients see a 50% reduction of seizures in the first year, neurostimulation outcomes improve over time: 83% of patients reported a 50% reduction in seizures after 5 years. It could be years before we see the impacts of these procedures.

<div><strong>The goal of all of this is to reduce Lyla’s seizure activity, reduce her pharmacological load, and give her the best quality of life available.</strong> We don’t know if she can be seizure-free, but we are hopeful that by doing this while she’s young, we can give her every chance available.
</div>

<div>Many of you have asked what you can do.

<div>1. Keep sending messages and texts. Your words and thoughts are helpful and meaningful. Lyla loves video messages directed at her. Even just quick video hellos make her so happy.

<div>2. Send DoorDash gift cards. Lyla basically lives on bacon but the hospital only has turkey bacon, and she hates it. So we will be ordering an obscene amount of food delivery to the hospital…mostly bacon.

<div>3. When we post her link, buy or donate Girl Scout Cookies. Lyla is missing cookie selling season this year due to all the surgeries. But the activities and community she gets to participate in when we sell 1000+ cookies is her entire social calendar for the year. Going to camp, baseball games, Build a Bear. She has fallen in love with some older girls from another troop but we only see them at 1000+ cookie sellers activities. She absolutely loves these activities. Please buy cookies.

<div>4. Support our GoFundMe. I don’t really know what we will need or want until we are in the hospital. Button front pajamas. Special neck pillows. More arts and crafts activities. Another koala lovey. Bacon. And once we are home, we may need different things or additional support (e.g. night nurses) to ensure Lyla’s safe and Morgan and Alex get some sleep. And after we reset, we will be doing it all over again for the second surgery. Supporting our GoFundMe is a way to support the unknown about Lyla’s recovery and our family’s recovery, over the next three months.

<div>5. Reach out to Leo. This won’t be easy for him either. Mom will be gone a lot. Lyla will have a lot of attention. Play dates, checking in, being his support will be very meaningful for him.

<div>An unexpected normal day commuting to work quickly changed into a terrifying and life-changing experience as a tractor-trailer crushed <strong>Taneyah’s car</strong> and caused significant injuries to her as well.

<div>With multiple broken bones, internal injuries, and several surgeries all within the same week, the healing and recovery have begun.

<div>However, <strong>Taneyah is going to need not only physical and emotional support from those around her, but financial help as well.</strong> We all know that no matter what life throws at us, our financial obligations continue on.

To that end, his wife is going to start a college fund for the two girls, 11 and 13, and my firm plans to help with the logistics. <div>Phil was diagnosed with leukemia (AML) in January 2024 after a routine blood test. He didn’t have any symptoms or issues and was completely caught off guard.

<div>He was admitted to Cleveland Clinic to begin chemotherapy right away and was in the hospital for over a month. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>On March 3, he was released from the hospital to go home and reunite with his kitties while beginning 2 more month-long chemotherapy regimens. This was in hopes the chemotherapy would kill the cancer cells to prep him for a bone marrow transplant.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>On May 20, Phil learned that the chemotherapy has not killed all the cancer cells needed but the plan is to go through with the bone marrow transplant as scheduled on 5/31. There is a 20% chance the bone marrow transplant will be successful! After the bone marrow transplant is complete, he is going to have a long and intense road to recovery, he will be in the hospital again for 1 month and then will be released to recover at home for another 2 months and will need a full-time caretaker.

<div><strong>Any funds donated will be used to help offset medical bills, unexpected costs, loss of income and a his full-time caretaker (Susan, Phil’s mom, who will be unable to work her normal job during this time). </strong>

<div>Phil is 34 years young, he has a great support system of family and friends who have been there for him. He has 2 cats that provide him with the best cuddles. He loves Harry Potter, The Office, going out with friends on the weekends and visiting his family. He works for Salesforce but is currently on leave.

<div>Mark Pembleton made a selfless decision on September 18, 2023, when he witnessed a devastating fiery accident on route 28 in Sterling. After witnessing the accident, Mark pulled over, abandoned his vehicle (with his two children inside) and ran to inspect the scene. Once Mark started approaching the engulfed semi, he heard Cesar Yepez screaming for help. In previous statements made by Mark, "Cesar crawled through the window of the passenger side of the truck and then collapsed. Cesar was on his hands and knees. His shirt was burned off of him, but his pants were still on fire."

</div>
<div>At that moment, Mark could have made two decisions. One, freeze and watch a suffering stranger while he pleads for help, or two, choose to risk his own life while his children watch their father enter a burning truck, unsure if he will return. Thankfully, Marks 20 plus years in the Navy and his selfless heart helped him make the decision he made. 
</div>

</div>
<div>During an interview with NBC4, Mark commented, "I have to get him out of there. If he was fighting, I was fighting.” After witnessing Cesar's condition, Mark rushed in and started pulling Cesar away from the fire. Due to Mark's fight or flight decision, Cesar has been given an opportunity that allows him to continue fighting. Unfortunately, because of Marks quick act of bravery and total disregard to his own safety, he ended up leaving the scene of the accident in an ambulance with 3rd degree burns to his head, arms and hands. Mark has already undergone surgery for skin grafts and was able to return home to continue healing with his family.

<div>Last Monday I received a message on facebook from Marks wife, Fernanda. She shared with me that her husband was the man who helped pull Cesar from the fire and their only concern at that moment was if Cesar was still alive. Never once did Fernanda express any sort of anger or frustration towards the fact that her husband was laying in a hospital bed and THEIR life would also never be the same. Since that initial message from her, they have spent endless amounts of energy and time checking in on Cesar and his family, and continue to do so every night since the accident happened. No amount of appreciation will ever make up for what Mark's family lost on the side of the road that evening as well. Mark deserves to be recognized as a hero in his community and we will be sure that happens! Please help us support Mark and his family while they take the time to heal internal and external wounds.

<div>September 18, 2023 tragedy struck the Yepez-Casucci family. Cesar was involved in a potentially fatal semi-truck accident on rt28 in the evening hours. Cesar’s truck ended up on the side of the road, turned over and engulfed in flames. Thankfully, due to a few extremely brave and selfless individuals, Cesar is alive but fighting for his life on a ventilator in critical condition. Cesar has been left with 87% of his body in 3rd degree burns and they are currently unsure what the status of his brain, eyes and lungs are. Considering there is still so much unknown regarding what Cesar’s future holds, the family is left in a very vulnerable state.

<div>Cesar has a wife and two small children rooting for him at home. Brianna and their children have always been Cesars world. Even during this life threatening event, his will to live for his children and wife gave him the strength to pull himself from the burning truck. No matter the situation, Cesar always thought about coming home to them. Unfortunately, that was not the case Monday evening. 
</div>

<div>Cesar’s road to recovery is still very much up in the air. This unfortunate situation will leave Cesar’s family in extreme financial strain. Brianna is no longer able to work for the time being due to the severity of Cesar’s injuries. Between the long travel to and from Medstar attending to Cesar and being able to keep some consistency for their children, emotionally and financially the Yepez-Casucci family is going to be pushed to their limits. Even though nothing will change the families emotional state, I am hoping to be able to at least help with their financial strain.

<div>My sister and best friend, Becky, was murdered in her home on February 23, 2023. She was just 41 years old. Despite the circumstances of her death, she is remembered for the life she cherished—a life of compassion, generosity, faith, and fierce love for her family.

<div>She leaves behind three young children and an entire community who loved her more than anything. Becky always envisioned herself working hands-on in the medical profession, so it was no surprise when she chose a career in nursing—her true calling—where she was able to provide care and comfort to people on a daily basis.

<div>Daniella, a dear friend and gifted therapist, has spent the last couple of years of her life trying to treat and recover from an aggressive cancer. Despite her doctor's hopes and expectations that her cancer would respond to treatment, and despite major surgery, it has now recurred for the third time. At this point, doctors are uncertain whether another round of traditional treatment will work, and Daniella is unsure whether she can go through another bout of intensive chemo and radiation.

<div>However, Daniella has discovered an alternative form of treatment that has shown great promise in peer-reviewed studies, and has been shown to work for types of cancer that do not respond to traditional treatments. Daniella would like to try this treatment to see if it can save her life, and time is of the essence.

Because she has spent the last two years being treated for cancer and recovering from cancer treatments, she has not been able to work or see clients, and can now barely afford her rent, being forced to enter credit card debt to survive. <div>The Robbinsdale police, Robbinsdale Fire Department, West Metro Fire District, and North Memorial ambulance crews did everything they could on the scene, but Emily's life was tragically lost. John remains hospitalized in critical condition with significant injuries. He's medically stable now but has a very long and difficult road ahead for recovery. On Sunday February 22, in the early morning hours, we lost our beloved colleague and friend John Huff. He was 46 years old.<br /><br />John impacted our lives greatly: through his kind words and deeds; his always looking for common ground and ways to connect with us; his smile and perpetually cheerful and positive attitude; his professionalism yet use of humor and perspective in his work…the list is long.<br /><br />John’s wife Liz and daughter Fiona need financial assistance to help pay for Fiona's college.  Fiona is a Senior in high school currently enrolled in community college. She will graduate from Walkersville High School in Maryland in June with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Frederick Community College.<br /><br />With John's passing, Fiona and Liz are focused on establishing a college fund to get Fiona through her final two years of college. Fiona has been accepted to George Washington University and the University of Tampa and is currently deciding between the two. Her current goal is to become a CPA. <div>On January 9, 2022, Brennan Callen was a young man with a world wide open in front of him. He was getting ready to go back to school, with the goal of earning a Master's Degree in Psychology. One day soon, he'd be a therapist. He'd spent the day hiking with his girlfriend, Kayla - he was going to propose this spring - and her twin sister, Morgan. They were headed home for a late dinner.<br /><br />When he woke up in the hospital, Brennan’s world had changed. He had two broken legs and a shattered wrist. Fractured ribs. A bruised lung. His girlfriend and her twin sister – only 25 years old – were gone, killed when a driver crossed three lanes of traffic and hit their car head-on.<br /><br />Now Brennan can't work. He's facing months of physical and occupational therapy. He has to take at least one semester off from school, postponing his career. Medical bills are piling up, and rent needs to be paid. In Memory of Rob: Aid for Veronica's Family

<div>Krystalee Krey Bowles has always led a life of thrilling adventure. She has climbed the steep faces of mountain peaks in Peru and rappelled down roaring waterfalls in Hawaii. About five years ago she said “I do” to the love of her life, Seth, as the two of them were suspended in air, dangling from ropes off of a red-rock cliff in St. George, Utah. The couple has since welcomed two absolutely beautiful children into their lives, a three-year-old girl and a baby boy.

<div>Krystalee is now embarking on a new kind of adventure; one that will need all of the love and support from her family and friends. <strong>Just days ago she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.</strong> Her biopsy results indicated moderate to poorly differentiated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Further testing will be required to determine how far the Cancer has progressed and spread. Doctors have informed her that she is somewhere between stage 2-4, depending on whether the spots found on her liver are linked to the same Cancer. Naturally this came as a shock to Krystalee and all of the family as she has always worked so hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle with her diet and exercise.

My sister Brandee and I were raised in this home in Altadena; every memory we had left of our dad is gone, and she had to leave with nothing but the clothes on her back.

<div>Yes, I love God, trust Him with my whole heart, and I'm grateful that He gave me the strength and wisdom to make the decision to leave, not knowing I'd literally have to drive through flames to get her out. But if I can be transparent and human for a moment, my grandma and my family worked tirelessly to help keep and maintain that home after the loss of my father; she had plans to gift it to myself and her great-grandchildren, and she was so proud of being able to do so. I am NOT okay, can't sleep, and my heart is so broken!!!

Help My Grandma Recover After Devastating Eaton Fire

<div>Dear friends, family members, and kind-hearted strangers. On October 27th, 2024, our beloved <strong>Trevor Higgins endured a disastrous dirt bike accident, leaving him fighting for his life in the ICU.</strong>

Trevor is seriously injured; he has surgeries and physical therapies in his future, and has a long road until he is back on his feet and fully recovered. The hospital bills are going to leave the family in serious debt.

<div>I’m reaching out to you with a heavy heart to ask for your support as my incredible mom fights an incredibly tough battle. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Since her diagnosis, her life has drastically changed, and our family is doing everything we can to ensure she receives the care and comfort she deserves during this difficult time.

<div>My mom, a sweet, loving, and strong woman, underwent brain surgery to remove part of the tumor, but she still faces significant challenges. Her left arm and leg are weak, and she’s currently learning how to regain strength and movement. At this point, she is unable to walk and requires assistance just to move from her bed to her chair. This journey is one of immense emotional and physical difficulty, and we are doing everything possible to help her regain independence and maintain her quality of life.
