THANK YOU!!!

Your donation will allow us to bring urgently needed medicine and surgical supplies to rural communities in Mexico, helping to treat pets and save sea turtles.

Each year a group of volunteer veterinarians and technicians from New England travel to rural Oaxaca, Mexico to spay and neuter dogs and cats who pose a threat to local sea turtle populations.   Communities in this region lovingly care for their pets, but lack access to veterinary services.  Consequently, canine population numbers grew unchecked for decades, resulting in heavy predation on threatened sea turtle populations.  The Mazunte Project was started in 2001 to provide sterilization services to communities along the most important sea turtle nesting beaches.   This effort has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of dogs roaming the beaches, and sea turtle populations have begun to recover. An added benefit to this work is improvement in the quality of lives of the pets we treat.  Sterilization reduces male dog fights, transmission of disease, and increases the life expectancy of female dogs and cats.

The Mazunte Project has been tremendously successful, but so much more can be done!  Each year we see several animals with severe tick-borne infections, wounds and treatable tumors - diseases that we easily treat every day in Newton.  Sadly, the Palmarito Sea Turtle Rescue is only able to provide spay/neuter servies, so many dogs are left untreated.  The tropical weather is also unkind to the surgical supplies that we store or ship down to Mexico, and many need to be replaced after years of use.

We are very grateful for the donation of supplies from Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital, our vendors and the many pet owners who have donated unused medications.  Our aim is to raise the money needed to cover additional supplies and equipment so that no animal needs to be turned away.  Additional funds raised will be used to sponsor technicians and Mexican veterinary staff who would otherwise not be able to participate in the Mazunte Project due to the cost of travel. Any remaining funds will be donated directly to the Palmarito Turtle Rescue (501c).
