Save the Caroline Street Kitties

$2,090 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 34 people in 4 months
For over 10 years, a fractured stray colony of 30 plus cats has been tended to by Key West locals on Caroline Street. Local waitresses, bar managers, renters, neighbors, store owners, and Key West cat lovers have been leaving food and water for this incredibly affectionate and docile colony of cats.

Efforts have been made in the last 2 months to socialize the cats more on a daily basis so that a wonderful organization called SNIP, Inc “Spay/Neuter in Paradise” can continue spaying and neutering the colony. Gwen and Valerie of SNIP, Inc. have been capturing and releasing cats of this colony for 6 years….successfully fixing 27 of these precious babies. Until this past week, the goal was to spay and neuter all the cats in the colony and allow good souled citizens to continue giving these cats love, food, water, and protection. Now the goal is to ensure these cats survive.

Things have changed in recent days and all these cats need to be removed from the area immediately!

These cats have the potential to become cuddly indoor companions with the patience and love of willing cat-lovers. Coordinated efforts of SNIP and local volunteers are currently being made to quickly trap the cats in order to avoid any harm coming to them and to avoid them being pushed into the unknown streets where they will lack the daily food and water they have come to depend on.

We are in desperate need of promised foster homes, permanent homes, and monetary donations to care for the cats until homes can be found. Any amount you can donate would be so greatly appreciated.

Update 4/18/18: Due to the heroic efforts of a few incredibly dedicated volunteers, 17 lucky cats have been rescued from the Caroline Street cat colony so far. 4 have been adopted locally and 13 are scheduled for chartered air transport to a cat sanctuary in New Hampshire on Thursday morning. Any amount you can contribute toward this endeavor would be much appreciated. With your help, we have saved over half the cats in the colony so far, and will continue to work tirelessly until they all have loving homes.

We're grateful to everyone who reached out to us with offers of assistance after we helped to bring exposure to this issue. There was even an article in the Key West Citizen about the plight of these kitties, and rescue efforts are currently underway.

Three cats, two females and one male, have been successfully captured, spayed/neutered by SNIP, and are healing from their operations under the loving care of a dedicated foster mom. These three will be available for adoption soon, and Royal Palms Realty has pledged to sponsor their adoptions. If you're in a position to provide a forever home, please contact savecarolinestreetkitties@gmail.com

Any amount donated toward the ongoing efforts to rescue and find homes for the Caroline Street kitties would be greatly appreciated. We are grateful for your generosity and support.
