Protect the Clintonville Kangaroo

$235 of $150 goal

Raised by 20 people in 3 months
For years kangaroo residing in the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio were protected by this lone kangaroo crossing sign on Clinton Heights. On the morning of Monday, March 12th, the city removed the sign. A small minority claim kangaroos are a nusiance. Why are we trying to protect then? The Friends of Clintonville Marsupials disagree. We beleive that it's very odd to have kangaroo roaming the streets of our neighborhood. We should celebrate and protect our friends from Down Under by erecting a replacement Kangaroo Xing sign.

This campaign is for the purchase of a replacement sign, a U-Channel sign post, and any miscellaneous costs involving the installation. Any additional funds raisied above the cost of the sign and it's installation will be donated to a charity supporting kangaroo welfare.

We spoke to several people with the city of Columbus last week. Due to the close resemblance to an official traffic sign, the city will not issue a permit for the Kangaroo Crossing's return it's original location on Clinton Heights. The sign is being returned to it's owner this week. There our several ideas being floated about where the sign should go, which we will discuss once we learn more.

The great news is that Clintonville has banded together to voice our opinion and really own the sign as a valued and missed component within the community, which leads us to our idea...

Let's make the Kangaroo Crossing the officially symbol of Clintonville. As stated in the linked petition, "In a week's time, the Kangaroo Crossing design has become a symbol of civic engagement, creative problem-solving, local government bureaucracy, and perseverance within our neighborhood. The story of the sign has made local and national headlines (The Columbus Dispatch, NPR, USA Today) and inspired a level of participation in the community that would be a missed opportunity to not harness in a positive fashion."

Thank you to everyone who has generously donated to this campaign and spread the word about this story. Since the sign's removal this morning, dozens of neighbors have expressed their fond memories of discovering it while driving through the neighborhood, walking their child to school, or tracking it down after hearing about through word of mouth.

I'm happy to report we have raised enough funds to replace the sign with an exact copy as well as purchase a U-channel post to attach it to. Any funds raised beyond the cost of the installation will be donated to a charity specializing in kangaroo conservation. The charity originally mentioned in the campaign asked that we not specifically mention their organization so we removed it their name. Excess funds will still be donated to said charity.

In addition, public outcry has caught the attention of several local media outlets that are now covering the story. A link to one such article is below.

Keep posting about this. It may seem silly, but to me the kangaroo crossing sign symbolizes the type creativity and individuality that we should be celebrating, not removing. I appreciate the city's stance, but there are sometimes exceptions to the rule and this constitutes one of them. Our wonderfully diverse neighborhood (marsupial's and all) has been enjoying this sign for years without incident. I'm glad many of us our letting our collective voice be heard and telling the city they got this one wrong.
