The Otsego School District needs the community’s assistance to put long needed changes into action. The existing problem revolves around “lunch shaming”, one more unnecessary distraction in the learning environment.
The school is required to have a lunch policy regarding its lunch accounts. If an elementary student is 3 payments behind they will recieve a cheese sandwich, pictured below. If a junior high or high school student gets behind on thier account they will recieve no lunch at all.
“Lunch shaming” stems from when a child is unable to pay for his or her lunches, and they have already exceeded their 3-charge limit which is allowed. When this all too common scenario happens, the child receives a state minimum lunch which currently leads to ridicule among students.
Our view is that a child should not have to suffer from an adult decision, our view is also that sometimes life gets busy and we understand that, but no child should go without a hot lunch or marked as different and placed into a situation to be made fun of or ostracized. Our hope is to help Otsego minimize these distractions in school which can be done by supplementing an emergency lunch account, for kids in need of their community's support.
This is our opportunity to lend a hand to youth in need. We need your help to reach our goal. Help make Otsego a better place to learn, and make a lasting difference with our campaign. Thank you!
