Help Baby Noah Fight a Rare and Fatal Liver Disease!

This is Noah Anthony Hernandez. He is a strong 5-month-old who needs a new liver.

If you know Noah and his parents you are fully aware of their situation. If you do not, please read below for the full story. Thank you for supporting Noah and his wonderful family through this incredibly difficult time.

Noah's story and his parent's current situation.

Noah was born on February 24th, 2017 at Sutter’s Women's and Children's Hospital in Sacramento CA. While Noah was a few weeks early, he was born a strong and healthy baby boy.

A few months’ later things started to change. During his normal “4-month well baby” check up, Noah’s pediatrician thought he looked a little too yellow for his age and recommended his parents, Reymon and Alyssa Hernandez, take him to get blood work done.

The day the results came in changed Noah’s and his parent’s lives forever. Noah’s blood work showed some major abnormalities with his liver function.

On July 7th, 2017, Noah was admitted to Sutter Hospital, where they began testing him to attempt to understand why his blood levels were not where they needed to be. After several days in the hospital, constant blood work check ups and a liver biopsy, Noah was diagnosed with a rare and fatal liver disease called Biliary Atresia.

(See http://www.liverfoundation.org/abouttheliver/info/biliaryatresia/ to find out more about the diseases)

The disease affects only 1 in every 18,000-20,000 newborns in the United States every year. If caught early enough there is a good chance the liver could be saved through a procedure called the Kasai Procedure. Due to the rarity of the disease, Noah’s diagnosis was 60 days later than normal. His doctors at Sutter Hospital made a strong decision to transport him to Stanford Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, CA.  where they could do more testing, perform the Kasai Procedure if possible and prep him for a liver transplant if needed.

Noah was transferred to Stanford, late evening on July 13, 2017. The Stanford team quickly began prepping Noah and his parents for an afternoon surgery to attempt to save his liver. The Kasai Procedure would basically bypass the biliary ducts in the liver and connects a portion of the small intestine directly to the liver, which would help the liver drain bile to the small intestine.

While the procedure was completed successfully, his liver was too far-gone to reverse the damage that had been done.

After all of this, Noah’s liver is currently still slowly failing him.

He and his parents are currently at Stanford Children’s Hospital waiting for a Liver that they hope will arrive sooner than later. During his stay between the two hospitals, Noah has undergone 3 different surgeries to help sustain his liver. Noah has gone under anesthesia a total of 4 times and gets blood drawn daily. He is on more than 10 different medicines and vitamins. He has had multiple X-Rays, sonograms, echocardiograms and through it all, he still finds the energy to smile at the nurses, play with his stuffed animals and enjoys his walks around the hospital floor and the outside courtyard.

Noah is still in high spirits and continues to fight every day and to think he only just celebrated his 5 Month birthday on July 24th, 2017.

Noah, mom (Alyssa), and grandma (Cheryl) are currently still at Stanford Children's Hospital and are expected to be there for a few more weeks until either, Noah receives a new liver, or his blood levels normalize enough for him to be able to go home and await his transplant in the comfort of their home. Dad is currently driving back and forth to Stanford multiple times a week to be there for both Mom and Noah. After Noah receives his transplant the family will be required to stay in the Palo Alto area for at least 3 months so that the doctors can keep a close eye on Noah in the event the transplant does not take.

Your support and 100% of your donation will go to help with Noah’s medical bills that might not be covered under his insurance. It will also help cover his parent’s stay in Palo Alto and their travels to and from the hospital and any other unforeseen issues that may arise from his current situation.

Noah’s fight has only just begun. No parent ever expects to go through this with his or her newborn child. So it is with a humble heart that I ask that we support this strong and beautiful family through this terrible time in their lives, so that they know that while they are there fighting along side Noah, we, his family, friends, and community are here to do whatever we can to help support them through it.

Thank you all in advance and please be sure to look for any updates. We will do our best to keep everyone posted on Noah's condition and the status of his transplant. You can also follow him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/noahstrong17/
