Kayla Farrish/Decent Structures Arts Premiere: SPECTACLE

“SPECTACLE” is a multi-layered interdisciplinary work from the mind of Kayla Farrish. Looking through music, scene, narrative, and imagery, the work marries dance and film.  She explores the intersections of power as a woman journeys through the sticky inevitabilities of love and relationships in our current societal and cultural state. What is a woman required to uphold?

The first evening length production from Kayla Farrish/Decent Structures Arts merges  film with live performance in an explosion of feeling. We follow a woman in her re-examinations of sexuality, power, and trauma within society’s placement of her female body. Her wild spirit challenges expectations and processes it all. If we can see women, bodies, and people beyond objectification, perhaps we can make space to feel, and deconstruct gender roles and rape culture. There then can be healing and freedom.

About Kayla Farrish/Decent Structures Arts
Decent Structures Arts aims to hold up a mirror to the society we form and participate in, to the communities and cultures we identify ourselves with and lastly, to the tremendous and unique experiences that form us as individuals. Our guts, instincts, weakness, power, voice that we do or don’t find and our numerous attempts to related, drive me/us – I believe in the physicality of what makes us inevitably, catastrophically, hilariously, heartbreakingly and wonderfully human.

Usually, Kayla Farrish/Decent Structures Arts relies on the goodwill and volunteered effort on its many collaborators. “SPECTACLE” asks for a much bigger commitment of the many dancers, actors and crew involved, which deserves equitable compensation.

We’ve been successful in securing alternative funding ahead of its premiere, but now turn to our community of family, friends and fellow dance supporters to contribute to bringing our “SPECTACLE” to life.

The ask for this campaign includes the following:

Film Performer Pay

Live Performer Pay

Film/Live Crew Pay

Costumes and Prop Design

Film Set Rentals and Costs

Film Post Production

Additional Camera Equipment

Additional Technical Equipment/Support for Performances

Food for a full day dress rehearsal

Offsetting GoFundMe’s processing fees

Working  with a  large, diverse cast of collaborators, and creating through many mediums has been an incredibly relevant and special opportunity. The work was able to grow through our real experiences. I hope we can inspire others to see themselves and to eventually be heard as well.
We hope you’ll consider a donation towards achieving our fundraising goal!

Spectacle's Premiere was an incredible and impactful event. It was exciting, terrifying, vulnerable, and challenging in pushing questioning and feeling. I was astonished to not only achieve my first evening length, 1 hour and 20 minutes of a film and live performance weaved, but to get to the heart of why I made this work. I was able to question this gray scale of trauma, sexuality, and power within gender roles, relationships, and normalized behavior. We went towards women attempting to claim their bodies and sexuality and heard honest conversations at what we found in these attempts... Society warns that women shouldn't behave this way or they must find a way to trap men, while this allowance of being casual with intimacy, manipulating or not communicating, and "boys will be boys" is the acceptable mentality. What is the consequence of using others and dehumanizing them? What is the consequence of silencing women and telling them their feelings are weakness? We dove into these questions through love, loss, sexuality, trauma, and healing. And the audience heard us and began talking too. This is far from the end!!

I can't be more thankful to my amazing collaborators. This work would have not been possible without them. I thank Pepatian Dance Your Future Residency and BAAD! Bronx for this opportunity. In addition, I received the Foundation for the Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant for the efforts of Spectacle! Through this and your contributions I am able to compensate majority of my collaborators with a token of our appreciation. This is far from the end- We look forward to future performance opportunities, showings, excerpted showings and screenings, and community discussions to educate young women and men on empowerment of our bodies and intimate relationships.

I will be sending all of you your perks! You were in the credits and program. Behind the scenes videos are coming your way. I will check in to see if you would be interested in pursuing my work and all that we have planned.

Thank you! Thank you Thank you!
