Hi. My name is Silvara Trujillo.
All my life I have wanted to help the disadvantaged. I have had disadvantages in my life, including severe abuse of several types and extreme poverty, but I overcame them. I have pulled myself from homelessness and then a long struggle with physical illness to stability and a good life as primary caregiver of a person with disabilities.
Due to my past circumstances and long illness, I have been forced to quit work and rely solely on Centrelink (Australian Social Security) payments including the meagre Carer's Allowance, which is paid to caregivers of people with disabilities. I want to achieve my dreams but I need financial help to do this.
The Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors is an excellent college and I have chosen to take a Diploma of Counselling, with advanced study majors in Grief and Loss, Addictions, Relationships and Conflict Resolution, Child Development and Effective Parenting. This will provide me with a solid basis for future employment and better enable me to support the disabled young lady with whom I live.
I want to work as a counsellor, particularly for clients with low incomes and precarious situations. I have spent years volunteering in support positions via the internet, both text and videoconference and have been told, by people I have supported as well as professionals in the field who I have met along the way, that I have talent and potential.

There is a huge shortage of counsellors available for those who can't afford to pay large fees and need more than the 10 psychology sessions per year that Medicare provides in Australia.
