Help Kristie Small and Family

Donation protected

Today in the Washington Post, Kristie Small came forward with her story of workplace injustice. Last week, while in the third trimester of her pregnancy, she was fired by Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX), with whom she was serving as acting Chief of Staff.

Kristie had begun the job in June, and was fired after revealing that she was pregnant.  She told the Washington Post  that "it’s 100 percent clear to me that had I not been pregnant, I would still be in this job.”

We believe you, Kristie, and we want to support you.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act states that you cannot be "fired, rejected for a job or promotion, given lesser assignments, or forced to take leave" for being pregnant.

Kristie spent more than 13 years serving as a Congressional staffer before joining Rep. Cuellar's office.   In the wake of her firing, she now faces financial uncertainty and may have to change health providers during her pregnancy.

As leaders of Congress Too, and former Congressional staff dedicated to addressing sexual harassment and discrimination in Congress, we are raising funds to help Kristie and her family for the lost wages due to the wrongful firing, for any medical bills that will no longer be covered by insurance, and any other expenses she and her family will accrue during this time.

The funds raised will be transferred directly to Kristie and her family. If for some reason she does not want the funds, they will be donated to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund, an organization that insists on safe, fair and dignified work for women of all kinds.
