On May 11, 2021 during one of my son-in-law's, Efrain "Laz" Delgado, usual weekly mountain bike rides with my husband, our life changed in the blink of an eye.
On his last jump approaching home, he accidentally flipped his bike and landed on his neck. We immediately knew it was bad when we arrived at the scene of the accident and saw that he was not able to move any of his extremities. Thanks to the helmet, he never lost consciousness. He was air-lifted to the closest Trauma Center, one hour away from the town where we live, where he was informed that he had fractured 4 vertebrae in his neck and suffered severe spinal cord damage.
Two days later, an 8-hour surgery was performed where the C3-C7 vertebrae in his neck were replaced with pins, rods, and spacers. Doctors are unsure how long the recovery will take but will be able to assess the extent of recovery at the 1-year mark.
Days after surgery, during one of his physical therapy sessions at the hospital, he also suffered a pulmonary embolism due to blood clots that formed in the lungs during the surgery and he spent 3 days in ICU.
After 24 days in the hospital, he has now finally been moved to an acute rehabilitation center where he is focusing 110% of his energy on working toward recovery. Currently, his right hand has some movement, his left hand is the weakest at this point. Both legs are getting stronger, and sitting in a wheelchair for hours is a huge accomplishment.
I think the hardest part of this tragedy for him is not being able to hold his 5 years awaited miracle baby, Olivia, my granddaughter. She is now 17 months. Olivia is the light and motivation for the entire family as we are going through these difficult times and a roller coaster of emotions.
Laz and my daughter, Monica have been happily married for 10 years. Monica is the rock of the family now. She is currently juggling work, maintaining a home, raising a baby, and now being a caretaker as well.
In order to show Laz and Monica some support with all the upcoming life changes they will be facing, I have put together this page for them. Please do not feel any pressure at all to support as your prayers are what they really need the most right now. However, if you are able to and would like to support them in any way, no matter how small the amount, we will be forever grateful and we know that the Lord will multiply your gift 100 times over.
All funds raised will immediately help and support home accommodations and construction costs, the adjustment to one sole income, modified transportation costs, medical expenses not covered by health insurance, necessary medical equipment, etc.
Love and Blessings!
