I first started blacksmithing in 1992 on the screen porch of a 2nd story apartment in Daytona Beach Florida; we used a cast iron Hibachi grill, charcoal and a hair dryer. I have smithed in one form or another since that day but never once have I had a full-on shop completly dedicated to my rather flammable hobby.
For the past 8 or so years all my smithing has been done completely out of doors and under an open sky; which is great if you are gardening but not so much so when it comes to smithing steel. As one might imagine, this puts me at the mercy of current weather conditions, Winter, Summer, Snow, Heat,Unfiltered solar radiation, lightning, slugs (not kidding).... the works and I have forged in all those conditions..... except hurricanes. tsunamis, locust plagues (but we do have slugs).... you get the picture. and I do have problem with ticks as I am forging in an open grassy area.
In working outside, I do keep all of my tools in a horse stall in our barn and drag them out when I decide to fire up the forge. This adds a hour or two for setting up and breaking down my work space & adds, or rather detracts, from the amount of time that I can work.
In May of 2014 , prior to yet another stint of working 2 jobs I vowed to not forge again until I had built a shop to call my own..... and as fortune would have it I have not smithed since that day, nor am I any closer to my forge space. Which brings me to this point in time where I find myself asking you, the denizens of the world wide web, for assistance.
Help me Obi Wan..... you are my only hope....
