Help Us Give White Canes and Academic Tools to 130+ Visually Impaired Nigerian Students
The Ifite Blind Residence, located near Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria, is home to 130+ visually impaired individuals (university students, recent graduates, and skilled vocational trainees) all working toward independence in a world that wasn't built for them.
Without a white cane, crossing a street or navigating a hallway becomes a daily risk. Without a digital recorder, a lecture is lost the moment it ends. Without a working power bank or the right assistive tech, a semester's worth of notes can disappear along with a dead battery.
These aren't luxuries. They're the basic tools of independence and education, and right now, most of our community members don't have them.
What We're Raising Funds For
We're launching a structured, twice-a-year support program to equip this community with:
- White canes — for safe, independent mobility
- Orientation & Mobility training — led by a mobility specialist, so every cane recipient learns to use it with confidence
- Digital recorders — to capture and review lectures
- On-the-Go keyboards — so students can type notes and assignments directly from their phones
- High-capacity power banks — to keep essential devices running through long lecture days
- Noise-canceling headphones — to hear screen readers and audio playback clearly in noisy classrooms and libraries
Every recipient is verified through a real vetting process involving student surveys and in-person meetings so resources go to the people who need them most.
Why It Matters
This is not a one-time handout. It's the start of a sustainable model: assess needs, distribute tools, train recipients, and repeat — building toward a future where visually impaired students across our community can study, work, and move through the world with dignity and confidence.
If this pilot succeeds, we hope to expand the model to support other blind and low-vision communities across Nigeria.
