This fundraiser aims to demonstrate that our sponsor group, One Peace, possesses the necessary funds to sponsor Gerensea Gebrezgabher upon his arrival in the United States.
According to the Welcome Corps requirements, we are obligated to secure at least $2,425 in cash or donated goods by the time the refugee arrives in the United States. Currently, we have successfully secured 60% of the required total and are committed to meeting 100% of the funding requirement before his arrival.
Gerensea Gebrezgabher is a refugee from the Tigray region in Ethiopia, currently residing in Egypt. His life has been deeply influenced by the complex history of our homeland. The oppressive rule of the Derg regime inflicted immense pain on the people of Tigray. And pressured to join rebel groups, he fled to Sudan in search of safety, where he acquired refugee status and began rebuilding his life. However, his pursuit of stability encountered unrelenting challenges.
In subsequent years, both Sudan and Ethiopia descended into civil wars. In Ethiopia, the conflict, sparked by the government's military operations in Tigray, has endured for two harrowing years, resulting in widespread famine and displacement. The Tigrayan people are grappling with the severe consequences of this conflict, rendering any notion of returning home impossible. Concurrently, Sudan is grappling with internal conflict, adding further complexity to the plight of refugees, which forced Gerensea Gebrezgabher to once again flee and reside in Egypt.
