Help for a Hero, Vietnam Vet
Hello! My name is Cherie and I have a very important problem that I’m hoping you can help me with. I am raising money for my dad, Paul Nadeau… More specifically, his upcoming medical needs. Over the past few years, he has been in the hospital 3 times and had to endure 5 vascular bypass surgeries on his right leg along with all the pain and suffering that has gone along with them. Now, the doctors have told us that all of the procedures have failed and the only option that remains is to amputate his leg above the knee.
My dad is the strongest Man I know. He is a Veteran who served as a member of the 82nd Airborne and lived through 3 tours in Vietnam, part of which, he spent locked up in a POW camp. He has never talked about the horrors and hardships he suffered during the war except to say that the missions he was involved in saved many American lives.
As a child growing up, he seemed invincible to me and my siblings and even now, sometimes I can’t believe this is happening to him but, as an adult, I see that even the strongest of people need help as they face new life changing challenges.
Because of my dad’s age, the doctors feel recovery will be longer and more challenging than normal. I know he is up for the challenge but the financial side of recovery as well as being able to function in the future may be insurmountable with out help from donations.
He is 100% service connected with the VA but the max HISA (home improvement and structural altercations) grant is $6800. This means, the money to pay for most of the necessary renovations for his home will need to come from us. (bathrooms, entryways and interior doorways, etc.)
Because he will have to spend quite a bit of time getting around in a wheel chair, until his leg heals enough to accept a prosthetic, we are hoping to get him a powered model to maintain his independence. We are also hoping to get him a vehicle capable of carrying him to the VA for rehabilitation and strengthening. When he is ready, money will be needed for the cost of his prosthetic leg.
His coverage at the VA, although much appreciated, will fall way short of these goals and without your help, my father will have the added stress of knowing that he could never afford this himself.
I think one of the toughest things about this whole ordeal right now is that, because of the Coronavirus, my Mom will not be able to be at his side in the hospital. She has always been a rock for my dad as well as our whole family.
Life has not been easy for my dad over the years but the accident that initially caused these leg problems has taken so much from him. Throughout my childhood, he was always the most rugged outdoors man you could imagine. Due to the constant leg pain he has suffered, since 2014, he has given up hunting, ice fishing, boating and camping, among many other outdoor activities. He is a phenomenal wood worker, stone mason, handyman and craftsman. Unable to do these things has left him depressed and unmotivated. Add an amputation to that and he will need the support of everyone to get through it.
My goal is to raise enough money to make everything as easy as possible for my dad and to take the financial burden off his shoulders so he can concentrate on getting better.
With your help we can make him comfortable in his home, provide him with proper mobility and get him the prosthetic he deserves to get his life back.
