Last summer, Laura experienced a serious fall, and she broke her ankle. After surgery, her ankle became infected, and Laura was in and out of the hospital for three months. The infection did not clear, and the trauma she suffered to the area reached her bone, leaving no additional option other than amputation. Laura is scheduled for surgery the first week of November.
Her injuries and recovery have forced her to take leave from her teaching job, and, if she does not return by January 1, she will be at risk of losing insurance coverage and her salary. Laura is already facing extraordinary costs beyond those covered by her current medical plan and will soon be forced to pay out of pocket without an income.
A graduate of Boston University, Laura has worked as an elementary school and special education teacher at Central School in Warren for the past 20 years and has been named Teacher of the Year. She has worked at Camp Harmony for 20+ years, where Laura has worked in roles ranging from counselor to administration. Laura was active in her community and thoroughly enjoyed her teaching job with children. Her friends and family have seen these medical setbacks take a toll on Laura’s helpful spirit and love of teaching. And we want to all help her overcome her medical obstacles to regain her life back.
A former Springfield and Metuchen, NJ resident, Laura is currently living in a two bedroom apartment in Basking Ridge with her husband and six year old son. She is wheelchair bound, and her mother is currently acting as her full-time caretaker. After her amputation, Laura will need extensive medical care as she learns to navigate her new life as an amputee, including the need for an adapted vehicle to allow her to drive a car without her right foot.
We are establishing an initial goal of $50,000 to support her care and medical costs. Please consider donating today to help Laura as she recovers.
