Urgent Support Needed for the Garbayo Family

Hi, my name is Jeremy Cropf and I’m seeking support for my dear mother-in-law Janice Garbayo.
The Garbayo family has had one hell of a year.
One year ago, while my wife Megan and I were visiting her parents Janice and Francisco in Spain for their 50th wedding anniversary, my mother-in-law Janice had a heart attack, right on the steps of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. The experience was harrowing, and things were extremely touch and go for the next six months. Things with Janice’s health got so dire that my wife ended up having to take a leave of absence from work to travel to Spain multiple times to help take care of both her parents while they navigated this new uncharted terrain.
We are so so grateful for the endless love and support we received from family and friends during this difficult time.
Last December, Janice underwent open-heart surgery and received two new heart valves. Thanks to the wonderful work of her dedicated team of doctors and surgeons, the surgery was a success and Janice had a new lease on life. Her health and spirits were the best we had seen in years!
Unfortunately, after a few months of stability, Janice has hit another rough patch. On Friday, June 9th Janice suffered a serious stroke and has been experiencing subsequent challenges with her right arm and leg. She was preparing for surgery on her carotid artery at home when today, she suffered a bad fall and broke her right ankle, resulting in further hospitalization.
On top of this, Janice had a wheelchair accident at a doctor’s appointment a few weeks ago that led to her breaking a few ribs. It’s been a lot.
These medical issues over the past year have had a major financial impact on Janice and Francisco - both in terms of medical costs and travel expenses to and from the hospital. They are in need of financial assistance to help cover the next 6-months of anticipated medical and travel costs. They’ve been struggling these past few weeks and we’ve realized that we needed help from our larger community.
I am so incredibly indebted to both Janice and Francisco that I’m having difficulty putting it into words. Their unconditional love and kindness not only saved my wife and I during some of the darkest and toughest of times of our lives, but it also helped save other extended members of my family as well. Anyone who knows them knows how much they care about other people. Janice has the biggest heart and has been a mother and a friend to many. She has a magical ability to build a beautiful community of friends wherever she goes and is a pillar in her community in A Coruña.
Francisco has spent the last five years of his retirement working weekly at Catholic Charities in A Coruña working to provide resources and support to refugee populations. He’s always given back and it’s time for us to rally behind him and help him meet his needs in this difficult time.
I’m starting this GoFundMe to support Janice and Francisco during this incredibly difficult time and to help cover some of the medical and travel expenses that they will incur over the next few months of treatment. This is an amazing family who are part of our community and they need our help.
We are asking for any help to go towards Janice’s medical expenses and the attendant travel costs for both her and Francisco. While Francisco awaits a decision on his Spanish citizenship, they are paying over $1,000 a month for participation in Spain’s national healthcare program. They both live on a fixed income and with the added costs of hospital travel, medication, and home support, they are struggling to make ends meet. Once Francisco's citizenship is approved, they will no longer have to pay to be part of the plan and will be able to afford care comfortably.
- An immigration lawyer fee to nudge the government to approve Francisco’s application to secure their long-term sustainability.
- Travel costs associated with Francisco traveling back and forth to the hospital each day.
- Medication costs have tripled for Janice since the heart attack.
- Assistance with home tasks (cleaning, laundry, etc.) for Francisco so he can focus on Janice’s recovery.

La familia Garbayo ha tenido un año difícil.
Hace un año, cuando mi esposa Megan y yo estábamos visitando a sus padres Janice y Francisco en España para celebrar su 50 aniversario de boda, Janice tuvo un infarto en la escalinata de la Catedral de Compostela. Durante los próximos seis meses las cosas fueron muy inciertas, y mi esposa tuvo que ausentarse del trabajo para viajar a España varias veces par cuidar a sus padres mientras navegaban esta tierra incierta.
Estamos tan agradecidos por el amor y apoyo que recibimos de amigos y familia durante este tiempo difícil.
El diciembre pasado, se sometió a una cirugía a corazón abierto. Gracias al maravilloso trabajo de su equipo de médicos y cirujanos, la cirugía fue un éxito. Su salud y ánimo eran las mejores que habíamos visto hace años! Desafortunadamente, después de unos meses de estabilidad, Janice ha pasado por otra mala racha. El viernes 9 de mayo, sufrió un grave derrame cerebral y desde entonces ha estado experimentando problemas en el brazo y la pierna derechos. Se estaba preparando para una cirugía en la arteria carótida en casa cuando hoy sufrió una caída grave y se rompió el tobillo derecho, lo que resultó en una hospitalización adicional.
Además de esto, Janice tuvo un accidente de silla de ruedas durante una cita médica hace unas semanas y se rompió varias costillas. Ha sido mucho.
Estos problemas médicos durante el último año han tenido un gran impacto financiero en Janice y Francisco, tanto en términos de costos médicos como de gastos de viaje hacia y desde el hospital. Necesitan asistencia financiera para cubrir los próximos 6 meses de costos médicos y de viaje. Han estado luchando estas últimas semanas y nos hemos dado cuenta de que necesitamos la ayuda de nuestra comunidad.
