Hi everyone,
My name is Kelly, I am the mother to this handsome young man Alex. We are currently in the fight of Alex’s life with his current school and I am seeking help to come up with a retainer/payment for a lawyer to help me fight his school district and school for Alex’s medical needs.
in Dec 2024 Alex was awarded a 1:1 nurse in his IEP (individualized education plan) because of Alex’s medical needs, it’s imperative he has a nurse to be able to attend school. Alex is a very medically complex young man. He had Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, Epilepsy, Diabetes and is profoundly autistic (non verbal). Because of Alex’s seizures and his Diabetes his team of drs and myself all advocated for Alex to have a consistent 1:1 nurse for Alex at school. It was written into his IEP Dec 2024. Since then I’ve been in the fight of my life for Alex to receive the nursing care that he needs to attend school.
Alex’s school believes as long as they provide him with a nurse not the same one, they rotate nurse everyday, that they are not responsible past that. Here’s where the problem lies, Alex is non verbal, to know Alex is having a seizure or his blood sugar is low/high you have to know Alex’s mannerisms, what Alex’s ques are for which one he’s having. And rotating nurses they don’t know Alex well enough to know if there is something wrong. When they tried rotating nurses for Alex’s medical care, they didn’t read his diabetic plan and 1 nurse tried to give him 3 times too much insulin that could have costed Alex his life, another nurse tried to give insulin when insulin wasn’t due, and another one yes another one I know, couldn’t tell Alex was having low blood sugar and called me to pick him up from school, immediately I did and saved my child’s life each of these times. Alex stayed home from school from Dec 21, 2024 until Feb 1, 2025 because of the rotation of nurses and the mistakes that were made.
In late Jan 2025, Alex recieved a permanent nurse, she was amazing, then his school hired a new nurse for Alex in April 2025 without notice to me. Because his nurse that was hired in January was contractual, the school doesn’t want contract workers there only their own school employees.
since April 2025 I’ve been to every board meeting of the school, I’ve sent emails to the board, to the superintendent of his school district and his school begging them to keep Alex’s contract nurse multiple times I’ve begged them to keep her, that the new nurse couldn’t handle Alex’s medical needs. They refused over and over again. My husband and I were told on July 16th 2025, that the nurse that was hired in April would be Alex’s 1:1 nurse for the school year starting in August.
On August 5, 2025 I received a call from Alex’s school director stating Alex’s contract nurse agreed to come back and work with Alex because there was a resignation at the school providing an opening.
on August 8,2025 I was informed she was not returning to work with Alex that the school in fact lied to me about that. After fighting with them all day back and forth they told me the nurse they hired in April will be Alex’s 1:1 nurse for the school year 2025-2026.
on August 15, 2025 I went to Alex’s district and had a meeting with them to go over what needs to happen for Alex to succeed at school, following that meeting I had a meeting at Alex’s school with Alex’s administration team and all the nursing staff. I made a folder of important things to know about Alex, made cheat sheets for Alex’s new 1:1 nurse, I educated them all on Alex’s needs and advocated for him.
This morning August 17, 2025 at 1130am I received an email from Alex’s administration that Alex’s 1:1 nurse resigned effective tomorrow morning (the first day of school). So Alex has no nurse and can not go to school because of this.
I am asking for help to help my son, I don’t ask for help ever, but I’m calling on all my friends and family to help us now. We are not in the financial position to come up with all the money ourselves due to being a 1 income family (I stay home because alex misses a lot of school due to his medical needs). If you can find it in your heart to help my family, my son specifically to fight his school and get him what he needs to just be able to go to school and get a free and appropriate education like everyone else. We greatly appreciate any assistance.
Thank You so much, Kelly
