Tragic Sinking off Sao Tome & Principe
Donation protected
In the early hours of Thursday 25th April, tragedy stuck and a ship carrying critical cargo and over 60 passengers and crew, flipped over, forcing terrified men, women and children to abandon ship, jumping into the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Sao Tome & Principe Island, West Africa.
At the time, the death toll and those missing at sea was over 0.1% of the island's population and the devastating effect it had on this tiny island and its people was acute and painful. This was the life line for food, supplies, fuel and small holder retail stock - all lost!
Here there are very limited emergency service resources, both for a rescue and the enduring aftermath operation. A large majority of the rescue and recovery rely on the local community and private sector.
For this tiny paradise island with a population of approximately 7000, it was a full-blown tragedy in an already struggling, and delicate economy.
Now it’s time to help rebuild those families, rescue crews and communities who were affected by the loss of loved ones and who have been traumatised by this devastating event.
As friends of Principe, guests, visitors, or just good people out there and around the world, we appeal to you to give generously in order to help mend and provide support to the lives of those families who have suffered and rebuild the communities who are so dependent on this transit route.
The money will assist those communities affected and be invested in emergency radio equipment. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-6960875/Six-die-ship-sinking-Sao-Tome-Principe.html
