Dear Friends,
I’m reaching out to ask for your support for my father, Raymond Sensmeier, Michelle (Powell) Meyer, and Larry Powell. Most of us know that my dad and Michelle have been — and continue to be — long-time advocates for our lands, waters, community, and, most importantly, our future generations. Raymond, born and raised in Yakutat, AK, is a Vietnam veteran and a passionate steward of our lands who has dedicated his entire life to protecting the natural resources that sustain us all. At 80 years old, he has been battling the effects of long COVID, recurring bouts of pneumonia, and diabetes, and now requires an oxygen machine. Over the past year, he has been in and out of the ICU multiple times. Yet, he still stands up for our homelands.
Unfortunately, the tireless efforts of my dad and our friends to safeguard our environment, protect our sacred sites, and preserve our resources have led to a legal battle that is putting a tremendous financial strain on them and their families. This lawsuit, initiated by a man who allegedly failed to follow proper procedures, is an attempt to silence those who have been voicing concerns about the destruction of our sacred sites and the ongoing damages. Legal fees for the case have surpassed $150,000, with a 9-day trial scheduled for February.
As his family, we are calling on anyone who believes in them as well as protecting our lands and waters to support them in this fight. We are asking for donations to help cover legal expenses and allow my dad and our friends to continue their important work. Any amount, no matter how small, will make a difference. Your generosity will help ensure their voices remain strong in the fight for justice and environmental sustainability.
I also strongly believe that my dad and our friends should be spending time with grandchildren and family, focusing on their health, not dealing with this unnecessary legal battle and ridiculous financial burden.
Please consider contributing to this legal defense fund, lifting up our strong voices and spreading the word to others who might be willing to help.
Thank you for your time and support.
Respectfully,
Violet Sensmeier & Family & Friends
