In March 2023, my life changed forever.
I was the victim of a violent assault that left me with a severe traumatic brain injury.
I suffered multiple life-threatening complications, including:
* A subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage (two serious brain bleeds)
* A 9mm midline shift, where my brain was pushed nearly 1cm off-centre due to pressure
* Multiple skull fractures
* A Glasgow Coma Scale score of 7, meaning I was in a coma
* An emergency decompressive craniectomy, where part of my skull was removed to save my life
The reality is, many people don’t survive injuries like this.
Some never wake up. Others are left with severe, life-long disabilities.
Somehow, I survived.
That is entirely down to the incredible care I received from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and neurosurgical teams at Queen’s Medical Centre. Their skill, quick actions, and dedication gave me a second chance at life.
I’m still living with the effects of my injuries every day — including balance issues, memory problems, and emotional challenges — but I’m here. I can spend time with my family, be present for my children, and continue rebuilding my life.
And for that, I will always be grateful.
