On behalf of Katalin's family, most of you have already heard the heartbreaking news. In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 3rd, our family's lives changed in an instant. My sister, Katalin Hemauer (Spurgeon) was driving when she swerved to avoid a deer, overcorrected, and hit a patch of black ice. Her vehicle went into the ditch and struck a tree head-on.
Due to the severity of the crash, she was airlifted by Flight for Life to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. She suffered multiple serious injuries, including two broken ankles, a broken knee, cracked sternum, fractures at L4 and L5 in her spine, a small brain bleed, and a head laceration that required 17 staples. She remains in the ICU and has a long, difficult road to recovery ahead. Doctors anticipate she will need skilled rehabilitation before she is able to go home.
Once she is home, she will be wheel-chair bound and unable to bear weight on her lower extremities for an extensive period of time and will need help with daily tasks, medical equipment, and home modifications to make her living space accessible and safe. Along with ongoing medical and rehabilitation expenses, she will also be facing everyday living bills while she is unable to work. It's heartbreaking to watch her and her new husband, Kirk, go through this, and we are asking for support to help ease the financial burden during her recovery.
Any donation will go towards medical bills, rehabilitation costs, household expenses, and items needed to help her regain independence as she heals.
In addition to the GoFundMe page, Norm's Hollow Campground Bar & Grill will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, March 7th, 2026 to help support Katalin during her recovery. More details will be shared closer to the event.
If you're unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping my sister and our family in your thoughts. All of your generosity and kindness are appreciated.
Thank you for surrounding her with love.
