I'm Kyzelle Jones, a mixed Afro-Latino American and active-duty NAVY personnel, originally from Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a place where unity and community are celebrated, I've always believed in the power of coming together to help those in need. Being away from home to serve my country is a challenge I've embraced, but being far from Puerto Rico—where my heritage lies—while it faces a state of emergency is a humbling and difficult experience. My purpose is to aid, defend, and protect those in need, and to bring awareness to the realities faced by communities like San Juan.
Recent reports have shown that the water shortage in Puerto Rico has forced residents to haul buckets up flights of stairs, spend extra money at laundromats, and buy bottled water as the crisis worsens. In some of the island's most populated cities, including San Juan, people have been without running water for days or even weeks. The crisis is especially hard on elderly and disabled residents, with some being hospitalized due to the physical strain of carrying water. Community leaders have shared heartbreaking stories of neighbors injuring themselves just to meet basic needs, and many are struggling emotionally as well as physically. The water shortage stems from decades of neglect of the island's infrastructure, and despite efforts to deliver water, many communities are still left waiting for relief.
Funds raised through this GoFundMe will be donated to humanitarian and community organizations working directly in the affected areas of Puerto Rico. Your support will help provide clean water, emergency supplies, and much-needed relief to those most impacted by this crisis. Since I was just a young boy in Brooklyn, I dreamed of making the world a better place. While I am only one person, I believe in the strength of resilience, will, and community. By supporting this fundraiser, you become part of my dream and purpose—helping us move closer to a world where no one is left behind. Please join me in this call to action. Help me help those who need support. Join my purpose, on purpose.
