Monique has always loved swimming, and this summer she was excited to learn how to dive. On July 25th, after taking a dive off the board, she hit the water and immediately couldn’t feel her limbs or move. She was rushed by ambulance to KU Medical Hospital, where she received several doses of medication, but nothing relieved her excruciating pain. After a CT scan and MRI, doctors discovered a previously unknown injury in her neck and spine. The impact from the dive was just enough to cause severe damage, and on July 26th, Monique underwent emergency spinal surgery to fuse C4 and C6.

We don’t know what steps are next in her recovery, but we know she has a long road ahead. This year, Monique switched to a less expensive medical insurance option through her job, which means the CT scan, MRI, pain medication, hospital stay, emergency surgery, and everything to come in her recovery will lead to mounting medical bills. As her sister, I am asking for your help to alleviate some of the financial burden and stress during this difficult time.
