In January, a group of 5 students, inspired by Professor Luz Porras’s Guatemala Cultural Engagement class (SUNY New Paltz, Fall 2025) will travel to a small town in Guatemala called Panajachel. Located on Lake Atitlan, this town relies heavily on tourism, and most of the population is Indigenous Mayan. While the tourist economy is strong, many of these communities do not receive the benefit they should from the influx of visitors. As a result, communities face limited opportunities, scarce resources, and a lack of jobs that pay adequately, leaving many community members struggling economically.

Professor Luz and the group of students will be sponsoring and supporting a series of sewing workshops for women from the local community with the goal of skill-building to encourage entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency.

We are raising funds to support the workshops. With your help, we will buy supplies and provide sewing machines, as well as pay to feed 20+ women and their kids lunch and a snack for 6 days of the workshops.

Luz has been leading groups of college students for service-learning trips to the area since 2015. For the last several years, Luz and her students have partnered with Angela Kunz, a teacher of fashion and sewing, to bring sewing workshops to low-income local women in various communities around Lake Atitlan. This year will mark a continuation of this effort. Many of the participants are returning members who will continue to enhance their skills, while others will be learning how to sew for the first time.

The students who will be traveling to Guatemala with Luz have spent the last 3 months in Luz’s Guatemala Cultural Engagement class learning about the history, politics, and culture of the country. They have worked one-on-one, teaching basic English to students in Panajachel and the surrounding communities. It has been a rewarding and culturally enriching experience for all concerned. Luz’s students are very excited to make these workshops come to life while also having the opportunity to meet their students when they visit in January!

**Any money left unspent will be donated to Niños del Lago to support their programs. Niños del Lago (NdL) is a Guatemalan non-profit organization which is officially registered as a non-profit Civil Association in Guatemala, a 501(c)(3) NGO in the United States, and an ANBI (Public Benefit Organization) in the Netherlands. The organization works with vulnerable children, supporting their education, health, and personal growth with the goal of creating safe and inspiring spaces where children can learn, create, explore, and build the confidence to dream big and become positive role models in their communities. **

En enero, un grupo de 5 estudiantes, inspirados por la clase de la Profesora Luz Porras llamada Guatemala Cultural Engagement (SUNY New Paltz, otoño 2025) viajará a un pequeño pueblo de Guatemala llamado Panajachel.

Panajachel está situado cerca del Lago Atitlán; su economía depende mayormente del turismo. La población es principalmente maya indígena que a pesar de la economía turística enfrenta falta de oportunidades, recursos y trabajos que paguen adecuadamente. Mucha gente en esta comunidad lucha diariamente por salir adelante económicamente para sostener a sus familias.

La profesora Luz y su grupo de estudiantes promocionarán y apoyarán una serie de talleres de costura para mujeres de la comunidad con el objetivo de desarrollar habilidades que impulsen emprendimientos futuros.

Por esta razón estamos recaudando fondos para apoyar los talleres. Con su ayuda, compraremos suministros y proveeremos máquinas de coser, además de cubrir la merienda y el almuerzo para más de 20 mujeres y sus hijos durante estos 6 días de capacitación en los talleres. El dinero que no se gaste se donará a Niños del Lago para apoyar sus programas.

La profesora Luz ha estado liderando grupos de estudiantes de la universidad con viajes de aprendizaje con servicio en el área desde el año 2015. Durante estos últimos años, Luz y sus estudiantes se han asociado con Angela Kunz, quien es una maestra de moda y costura, para brindar talleres de costura a mujeres locales de comunidades alrededor del área del Lago Atitlán. Este año estamos muy entusiasmados por la continuación de este esfuerzo. Muchos de los participantes estarán regresando para aumentar sus habilidades, y otros estarán aprendiendo habilidades de costura por primera vez.

Los estudiantes quienes estarán viajando a Guatemala con Luz han pasado los últimos 3 meses en la clase de Guatemala Cultural Engagement aprendiendo sobre la historia, política, y cultura del país. Han trabajado uno a uno enseñando inglés básico a estudiantes en Panajachel y otras comunidades del área. Para nosotros como estudiantes ha sido una experiencia gratificante y culturalmente enriquecedora. Como estudiantes estamos muy emocionados por conocer a nuestros estudiantes cuando los visitemos en Guatemala en enero.
