My mother, Jamey Meyer, was coming home one night from the Fort Randall Casino near Pickstown, SD, when a snowstorm made the roads nearly impossible to see. She thought she was on a straight gravel road, but the road curved unexpectedly, causing her car to roll and all the windows to shatter. Jamey decided to stay in the car for safety, but with temperatures around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, she was freezing. She tore apart the blue cloth seats in her old Chevy Caprice Classic just to stay warm. For hours, she lay there, fighting off the cold and waiting for help. When the sun finally rose, she gathered her strength and started walking, eventually making it to Carol Kocer's house, who brought her to Wagner Hospital.
The injuries Jamey suffered were severe—three lower back fractures, a fractured nose, deep tissue bruises all over her body, bruised ribs, and a gash in her eye socket that required surgery. She was transferred to Avera McKenna in Sioux Falls, SD, for more advanced care. Now, Jamey faces a long recovery. She will be unable to work for months and will need to use a wheelchair for a long time. With her back fractures, she won't be able to walk as she used to, and the medical bills and recovery expenses are overwhelming.
We are reaching out for help because Jamey has always been strong and independent, but right now, she needs support more than ever. Thank you all for your help from my family and my mother. She doesn’t like asking for help, so I decided to because I know how much she needs it—God Bless You!
