Hi everyone! We are raising funds for a school trip to the Azores (Portugal) for our fifth graders in the Olá Portuguese-English bilingual immersion program at the King Open School in Cambridge, MA. In April 2026, the students hope to spend 5 days on Pico Island, a fitting capstone and a recognition of the hard work they've put into learning Portuguese over the past 5 years.

They'll receive school credit while exploring volcanic caves, studying with local students during a school visit, whale watching, viewing cultural and historical sites, and enjoying Azorean food, culture, and music with their teachers, chaperones, and each other.

If you can, we would be grateful for your help supporting the cost of the trip. Your donations will go to subsidizing the airfare, travel expenses, and room and board for the students, and ensuring that financial constraints are not a barrier to participation for our students. Friends of the King Open School, Inc.

The Friends of King Open (FOKO) is a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) non-profit association founded by parents to support all King Open children. Our mission is to develop, support, and enrich the academic and social development programs at the King Open School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. King Open is a public elementary school for grades junior kindergarten to fifth grade with a focus on social justice and project-based learning. We are focused on making sure our vibrant, strong, and supportive learning community is accessible to everyone by supporting: Classroom stipends for teachers Books for classroom libraries Student activities like field trips and author visits to the library In-person KO family activities: Book Fair, Movie Night, Science Day, Carnival, etc.
